View Full Version : Imposing Western values on Thailand

I've started reading the book "Imagining gay paradise (http://www.amazon.com/Imagining-Gay-Paradise-Bangkok-Cyber-Singapore/dp/9888083236/ref=sr_1_1_title_2_har?ie=UTF8&qid=1393108593&sr=8-1&keywords=imagining+gay+paradise)"; the first chapter is about King Vajiravudh (Rama VI). The chapter explains in great detail how Western sexual values clashed with Siamese ones. Remembering the posts made by some members about how Thai boys "must" hate having sex with older males, those racist attitudes still seem to be alive today. Here's a typical comment in the book: "To be 'civilized' was to embrace the new triple supremacy: romantic, monogamous heterosexuality. Other forms of intimate relationships and of family organization would have to be considered 'degenerate' and 'uncivilized'. Dare I mention the latest fad of cultural imperialists - "gay marriage" - in the same context?
