Found this blog called "Farang Freedom" just now. It's Thailand based and is a "location independent gay lifestyle" blog. I'm publishing excerpts from its RSS feed to the main page now. Thought you guys would appreciate this one - e.s.
How can you tell if the guy that you have just met is a professional money boy, a kept boy or a civilian?
This is not always an easy thing to determine, but here are a few tips for not-so-young players.

The visual check.
тАЬBut you canтАЩt judge a book by itтАЩs cover!тАЭ, I hear you calling. This is true. But as a rough rule of thumb in conservative Thailand, if it walks like one and quacks like oneтАж.you get the picture.
Points to look out for are;
The hairstyle.┬а
More spikes than a durian ? Beware!
Extremely loud and effeminate behavior.
Like a Thai soap opera prima donna? Danger, Will Rodgers!
Either of the above in addition to very short, thin or conversely, steroid junkie muscular.
Shows either a low-income background┬а(compared to other Thais) or a body that puts rice on the table.┬аRun, Forrest, Run!
The longer-than-comfortable-eyeballing.
Thais are generally shy people with a group focus, so they care about what others think of them. That kind of staring is not acceptable in the wider (gay) society.
Where he┬аhangs out┬аin DJ Station, Balcony Pub and Telephone Bar.
The night usually starts in Silom Soi 4 so letтАЩs begin with┬аTelephone,┬а (/jordo/blog/nightlife-in-bangkok-silom-soi-4/)BangkokтАЩs oldest gay bar (and probably oldest┬аclientele). Money boys ┬аat Telephone tend to be older and more masculine looking. As the older customers prefer the┬аair conditioning┬аinside,┬аthatтАЩs┬аwhere the money boys will be. If he is there alone, stares intently, presses his leg against yours and asks for a drinkтАжBingo!
Across the street at┬аBalcony (/jordo/blog/nightlife-in-bangkok-silom-soi-4/)┬аthe action is on the road in front of the terrace looking back at Telephone. This money boy tribe likes to gather in the front row either side of the entrance. As there numbers grow around ten pm they push tables together often including one┬аfarang┬аwho is paying for their drinks. Their┬аshrieks┬аand cigarette smoke make them hard to miss.
They then get up and move┬аen masse┬аto┬аDJ Station (/jordo/blog/nightlife_in_bangkok_silom_soi_2/)┬аin Soi 2 just before show time. Over there, the money boys stake out their territory around the railings of the second floor (especially towards the stairs to the third floor) where they can look over the edge of the mezzanine to the dance floor and stage long after the show has finished. They will also devour any foreigner who passes on the ┬аway upstairs.

The aural check.
His тАЬsnake-snake, fish-fishтАЭ multiple foreign languages.
He can speak many languages (especially English) very badly. This skill comes in handy for communicating with patrons from various countries.

Also beware of solo European vacation snaps often taken on the same day. When you add a Pattaya, Silom or Sathorn location into the equation, it should be a no-brainer.

He is out every night despite the fact he is a waiter, a student or unemployed. Minimum wages in Thailand recently got a pay rise to 300 baht per day. As this rate is about double what it was ten years ago, itтАЩs not uncommon for unskilled┬аlaborers┬аto work 12 hours a day, 6 days week in order to earn it. That doesnтАЩt buy you many drinks at DJ or allow you the time.
In addition, he has conspicuous signs of wealth. Whereas the money boys are faking it before they make it, the kept boys are sitting pretty. These laddies of leisure have the latest smart phone and ┬аiPad before they are sold in Thailand. They also have a nice condo near Silom or in Pattaya which one of┬аtheir┬аoff-shore sugar daddies set them up in. This is also the reason they suddenly disappear for a family тАЬemergencyтАЭ or тАЬhave to take care of a friendтАЭ.
Now, ┬аI know these are stereotypes because I was chatting on Planet Romeo to a very smart a respectable looking young Thai man from Nonthaburi, a satellite province in the greater┬аBangkok┬аmetropolitan area. As our introductory online conversation in Thai unfolded, I asked him what he was looking for. The usual response is any combination of friends, boyfriend, long term relationship or fun.
His response was,┬атАЬMoneyтАЭ. He said he┬аdidnтАЩt┬аconsider himself a money boy but he wanted to buy a house.
Hopefully the object of your attention doesnтАЩt meet the above criteria and you can go on to build a happy relationship. If he does however, I hope you will be saved the heart-break of finding out too late that he only wants you for your money.
