They CAN be updated but do not NEED to be updated. Click on any of the old links to the wordpress.com subdomain for that blog anywhere on the whole WWW and the link takes you to it's new home on its own domain- this is because of the redirect setup on the old wordpress.com subdomain.

The redirect is setup for a year. If Rush decides not to renw the redirect service next year for some reason (It is very cheap and effective) then next year you might need to redo the links.

When I read his blog I thought it said soon the links won't work, having re-read the blog it will be til next November if he doesn't re-new it.
