Just wondered if the gentlemen of this board have recommendations for cheap pads in Bangkok with air con.
I'm skint and would like to stay a few weeks in Bangkok, with the luxury of air con.

I've never ENJOYED a trip to Bangkok. I've always escaped up to ISSAN or down to my favourite PHUCKET.
This time my finances are tight so it makes sence to avoid travel costs and stay in Bangkok. So what can I enjoy in BKK (I have a boyfriend, so not interested in the massage, Go-GO scene etc).
So do you gents have recommendations for cheap pads and advice on how to enjoy a few weeks in BKK, without escaping to the beach?

I'm sure you have heard of people mentioning Pinnicle Lumpinee. Other option may be Malasia Hotel.

I remember some months back somebody singing the praises of the Karnmanee Palace Hotel (http://www.karnmanee.com/index.html). Haven't tried it myself, but book marked the link for future ref. If I remember right, the only criticism was its location ~ a little further to travel to/from the Silom fleshspots.

I enjoyed it but it is a little more expensive than Pinnacle and Malaysia. Nothing really special, but a very Thai crowd, and the Thai breakfast buffet is way above average. Best to book online to get the best price.

5,000/month? 10,000/month? Don't forget that with apartments/rooms all utilities are on top of the rent and can be 50% or more of the rent. As well, if you're hoping for a room in something like LA Mansion in Petchburi 5 then you have to pay a 2 or 3 month "deposit" and commit to a 3 or 6 or 12 month lease - funny that, just like at home

Thanks for that Cottmann, that seems like a serious option at 700bht a night.

Thanks for the comments on Karnmanee Palace, seems nice and well worth a look.

I could stay with my boyfriend (in deed he'll try his best to persuade me to do so!), but his apartment lacks one essential luxury: aircon!

The cheapest flight I can find (in December) is around ┬г385 (inc taxes) on Etihad. Mixed reviews for this airline, but the cheapest by far.

Thanks for your help gentlemen.

Just a thought... but if disposable do$h is tight at the moment (I'll not ask the reasons why although conspicuously aware the Tories aren't doing too well just know), you might consider NOT visiting just now lest your economies portray you in his eyes as 'poor'. I realise you want the opportunity of being with him again, but in Thai eyes, image is so important. I'm just wondering whether postponing your trip a little longer (it's a Lotto rollover this weekend bye the way) might provide you with more 'readies' when you get there.

Hi Michael
If you really want to slum it the Honey House in Sathorn always has rooms available, usually at 4-500B per night with Air, hot water and TV

Not luxurious but very central... its located 100 Metres closer to Babylon than the Malaysia... Opposite the Junction of Sathorn Soi 1 and Soi Ngam Duplee (Malaysia/Pinnacle)

Always loads of Gay boys and budget farangs staying there...
Have onloy stayed there twice when pinnacle, babs and Malaysis wre all booked out...

Michael, the Karnmanee is a very nice middling hotel. Nothing exotic, but reasonably priced (1100-1200 baht now by the looks of it), clean, and friendly. Thai/Western breakfast buffet included in the price, nothing special, but good coffee.
We've stayed there many times, and I really like the Pradiphat/Saphan Kwai neighbourhood. I think it's a 30-40B Skytrain ride to Saladaeng from Saphan Kwai Station ... or about 60-70B taxi.
Chatachuk Market and park within walking distance.

The hotel has a quite romantic restaurant on the roof (Thai food only menu and live (gentle) music as background on Thurs Fri and Sat nights). Also has a rooftop pool to cool off in during the afternoon ... very few guests use it, and we often had it all to ourselves.

Recommended for those who want to explore Bangkok neighbourhoods somewhere other than in the Silom area.

Cheers ...

it was "sexual healing" that drew me to pattaya my first trip in 1997
never did find that actor/twink, but did meet one very nice boy in a "tralier" for another movie- he was on his way home and I didn't realize it until I was already back home

Back on the subject of economy hotels, which ones recommended have safes?
Maybe doing a lengthy stay soon and would prefer to go light on the hotel bill.

It looks like a lot has been 'shot' in that room.

Best keep the light off and the drapes closed--If it has a window.

Dick,
He knows I'm poor. (at least by Western Standards) He's known that for 6 years!

Told ya it was slumming it!
But there are a lot of Gay farangs who stay there....

Even Bf was ashamed of the room, but there was six of us (3 rooms) and i wasn't goling to pay 2000Bx3 for the Tarntawan or Tawana ramada for 3 rooms!

And considering we had just arrived from 5 days in Buriram and Khorat, anywhere was going to be a step up!

Talking about Porn, its funny how often i recongnise rooms from the Ambiance (with the Marble Bathrooms) or Le Cafe Royale (with the insipid Green furniture) in photo sets...

And even more funny when i see Island Caprice boys (www.icsvideo.com (http://www.icsvideo.com)) boys around Pattaya - as it seems by Bf knows most of them!

Last month BF and I tried John Botting's suggestion about the Penguin House guesthouse (http://www.geocities.com/penguinhouses/index.html) in the Sathorn area and were very pleased with it. I guess it was about a 60 baht taxi ride to Silom. We had a huge room at the front for 900 baht a night which included its own computer, which was convenient for checking email while waiting for the BF to wake up (no extra charge).

Penguin house also has apartments for rent on the upper levels. We did not look at those, but according the website the rates for those run from 7000-8000 a month. Within 5 minutes' walk we enjoyed the O-Ho (a pleasant cafe with a Long Yang sticker in the window), the Trajai (a very friendly local restaurant) and the Just One (a very nice inexpensive seafood restaurant in a garden setting). The Trajai has a large breakfast for 85 baht, if I remember correctly, although it doesn't open until 11am (which fit BF's sleeping schedule perfectly). If you're a bit lazy or an early riser, the hotel itself has a rather skimpy breakfast (eggs, toast, coffee/tea) for 80 baht. The management style is very relaxed - you get keys for the front door and your room and you are pretty much left on your own. No safe, no leaving your keys at the desk, no problem with guests.

Apparently before this guesthouse opened, rooms were for rent above the Penguin internet cafe a bit down the street, and this is what most Google searches come up with. The current Penguin House is much, much nicer, but you have to keep a sharp eye out as it is very easy to miss as you cruise down the street in your taxi. I was in a taxi with the BF and 2 other Thai friends, and I was the only one who spotted the guesthouse.

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations for a cheap pads in Bangkok as an alternative to my Thai friend's flat (without aircon).

Oogleman, I agree that after a few days I can forget about aircon and not miss it, at least when I'm on a remote island or village or somewhere in Issan. It's something about staying in Bangkok that requires aircon: something about the heat, traffic, congestion, pollution etc etc that makes me NEED to withdraw and relax into an airconditioned room.

Thanks also for the advice in the thread on flights to Loei, Nok air seems a great way to escape the 'heat' of the city.

June 13th, 2006, 08:13
The problems I've had with this thread all along is the paucity of information. First of all it's a general request for "cheap rooms" information. Call me naive but I assumed this meant "in the next few months". A later post then reveals that we're talking December!! That would change anyone's advice, mine included, to be "so you want something cheap in the high season? Interesting!" That you need air-con in December I find puzzling - a ceiling fan does me from Loy Krathong until around the end of January (at least), and I'm a bit of an air-con lover

Sorry, to hear that you have 'Issues'.:pale:

I tend to book my flights early to get the best deals. Before I book my flight I like to have at least an idea about where I'm going to stay.

There are lots of threads on this forum that mention inexpensive guesthouses in Pattaya. I've found it useful to hear more about similar options in in Bangkok.
