I've invested in a few things to keep my new laptop safe while I am in Thailand. They are designed to alert me to movement of my things and sound off at 100 dcbl

I already have a cable lock.

I've tested them all and they perform better than I thought they would. I will be able to sleep easier when I bring back a stranger for the night knowing that a siren will blast out if they are touching my stuff while i'm sleeping. :glasses7:

The subject matter is similar but the information is fresh and new. Last time I posted about the new laptop I purchased for this trip, this topic is how I intend to keep it safe from theft.

Customer reviews are not great for any of these devices.

I've tested them and I like them. I guess the difference is that I am a total tech geek and understand the devices a little better than the average person. One person even wrote that the cable lock does not have an alarm on it, but it does have an alarm on it. They all also have the ability to set the sensitivity of the alarm/lock before the alarm sounds.

The only thing that may cause a problem is if it goes off in the middle of the night and my neighbors complain because it will take me a while to get to the device and punch in the correct disarm code.

For the one that is attached to the laptop, I will put it in a place that is not easily seen. if the laptop is picked up, tilted, or if the screen is moved to much at a certain pitch and speed the alarm will blare out! Not to mention that it will be connected to a cable lock and an additional cable lock with an alarm. The laptop bag will be in the closet with the bag alarm and the Ipad will be in the safe with the iphone in the holder with the briefcase alarm.

I want to stop a theft before it happens.

Holy cow. Seems like overkill to me. What exactly is contained in this laptop to warrant such protection?

I half jest... Some people like to play it safe....and that sounds overly safe.

I would like to see someone try to take it...should be like a thriller movie. I have visions of half-naked Thai boys descending from the ceiling on wires, gingerly cutting the cables while you doze. :sign5:

I am going to continue to process work related tasks with will contain company related confidential information. I can't afford to lose any of that info and I have to take care of this work or I may never be able to take a 4 week holiday again. :crybaby:

I think if they even look at it wrong it may sound an alarm! :sign5:

sorry but us real tech geeks would object to anything apple or i*** being mentioned in any sort of "tech report"...
Apple technology is the equivalent of Tomy or Fisher price.... suitable for 8 year olds and not for Adults...
BTW... looking at what you paid for your security devices... surely you could replace your equipment for nearly that price??

As to taking care of your companies information... that is Their responsibality... and i presume they would not let an amateur like you take care of any sensitive or restricted data... the data shuold already be secure and completely in the hands of the IT dept... and not left up to the amateur IT enthusiast???

There is no debate, what is, is, what is. I have to secure my laptop from theft while I sleep and I took steps to do that and I also mentioned why I am doing it and why it's important. :salute:

And for reading mail and chatting with guys on the apps and watching movies and video, the ipad rocks! :glasses7:

Surely if you back up to "the cloud" then if if your device is nicked or damaged you just reinstall everything from there instantly - problem sorted and no need for all the James Bond style security and you can get on with banging the boys instead of banging your head off a wall worrying about what might never happen ? See this is where the whole Thai Mai Pen Rai thing greatly appeals to me, stress about the stuff you need to and just let the rest of the worldly shit we freak ourselves out about just fly over your head as one of those things you can do damn all about anyway - there's a lot of be said for it!

That's not an option this year but I am told that once we go to the new system all we will will be able to connect to the system using an android phone or tablet and do everything on android that we can do in a windows machine. But we are not there yet.

So the cloud won't help me today.

I do appreciate the James Bond reference.

My name is Buck..... Buck (lights cigarette) naway. :glasses7:

My god if you're going to do it man at least do it right - see, this is exactly why James bond is British and uber cool and you yanks can only ever DREAM of being him - as it SHOULD of course be "My name is Naway..... Buck (lights cigarette) naway"

And I would also point out that good old JB wouldn't need all those slick devices anyway as he'd just stay up shagging all night anyway so the risk of theft while he slept would just never arise in the first place ! :-)

Hmm, I wonder could we get a nice Thai guy to be the first "Bond boy" perhaps - with Daniel Craig wading out of the sea in Pattaya dripping wet with his muscles gleaming - with a used condom already hanging from his ear probably then knowing the water quality in Jomtiem ! - wow, sexy or WHAT ! lol

He would introduce himself.... (Holding out his hand) Humongous...... Dicks Humongus :glasses7:

Hey, James Bond woke up to snakes in the bed, dead women next to him and more near death experiences than I can count. I just want to stop my laptop from being pinched LOL

I think the assessment of the risk of theft in any given location is crucial. On my first visit I asked the hotel to repair the doors to the balcony that didn't lock. They didn't repair it but it didn't matter. The chances of any thief attempting to get to that balcony were tiny. But two different men who I brought back to my room have tried to steal from me. Once it was my wallet; the other a debit card. Neither succeeded. All we can do is reduce the risk. Twice in different situations like this I have found that saying to men I have brought to my room that I am going to 'talk to the hotel' has brought a dramatic change in their behaviour. When I went to 'talk to the hotel' re the debit card, the card reappeared in my room.

Just an update. I have been using the alarm on the laptop and I like it. It can remain armed and allow me to type posts as long as I don't shake the desk. But if it were picked up the alarm sounds off and fills the room with a ear piercing siren!

It went off in my room at Babylon by mistake (I entered the wrong code) and scared the hell out of me! LOL

I have not used the other alarms yet. I have not needed them.

Nirish guy
October 16th, 2013, 15:23
"I have not needed them"

Isn't that the truth..... but hey as long as you're having fun scaring the crap out of YOURSELF with your gadgets James keep them coming lol

PS have you considered the possibility that someone might actually steal your main suitcase with all your clothes etc in there, which I'm guessing would amount to a monetary value of at leas the same as your note book if not more, not to mention the hassle of having to go out and re buy everything again, so really could be doing with something to secure that. Now, also, what about your wallet and the risk of you being pick pocketed as walk along the street, I believe there's a distance monitor alarm you can get for that which goes off if your wallet moves further than3 feet from you, which is also handy of course if you happen to leave it in a shop during a senior moment, perhaps that should go on your list too ?? :-)

I have an alarm for the main bag also. I have not needed them because I have not had any planned sleepovers. The one guy that slept over was here in Chiang Mai and he was only supposed to take a 20 min nap and he slept the whole night with me.

If I had planned for him to stay all night I would have set the alarms. :)

The one on my laptop is always on. If you bump it, it will give one short warning beep.

I have an alarm for the suitcase also :) I will use those when I have guys sleep over.

Nirish guy

he was only supposed to take a 20 min nap and he slept the whole night with me.

Perhaps it was HIM that you should have considered buying an alarm for !! :=)

October 16th, 2013, 16:23
Well if my laptop still gets stolen while I sleep, I will let you know, but I don't regret for a moment the precautions I'm taking :-)

Nirish guy
October 16th, 2013, 16:36
Well I guess if their presence lets YOU sleep soundly then they were a worthwhile investment - assuming they don't go off in the middle of the night of their own accord of course and end up waking you up, which would I guess defeat the whole purpose ! :-)

And you know I am just joking with you, if it's work stuff and you need to secure it then of course that's something you have to do, but don't think for a minute you're going to get away with not being labelled as a technogeek James lol

should we club together and buy a447 an alarm for his watch ??

Nirish guy
October 16th, 2013, 17:03
To little to late it seems :-( and apparently he's raging as apparently they told him there was already an alarm on it when he bought and it seems the damned thing didn't go off ! Technology eh, you just can't trust it these days - both it and guys in massage shops too apparently that is ! :-)

timmberty
October 16th, 2013, 17:17
ah ok, tho i would guess that one would have to set the alarm for it to go off ?

Nirish guy
October 16th, 2013, 17:19
and then hope that the thief would steal your watch at exactly that time of course and I mean what's the chances of THAT happening ! lol

October 16th, 2013, 17:31
Thank god for your updates bucky Ive been lying awake at nights worrying about your laptop being stolen.
and then hope that the thief would steal your watch at exactly that time of course and I mean what's the chances of THAT happening ! lolOnly if Bucky went for a massage thought he took his watch with him thought he took it off thought he forgot to put it back on and then accused the massage boy of being a thief?

You joke but it will work on a tablet and even a phone.

I know others will buy one :-)
