Gay Dutch ambassador leaving Estonia
The Hague (dpa) - The Dutch ambassador to Tallinn is leaving Estonia after just a year as a result of discrimination suffered by his partner, a black man from Cuba, Dutch media reported Tuesday.
The NRC Handelsblad newspaper reported that the difficulties in Estonia began a year ago when a Tallinn weekly described the appointment of Hans Glaubitz as provocative.
His partner, who was not named in the reports, is said to have been the object of insults and threats.
Glaubnitz said the Estonian authorities were not to blame for his decision. "Estonian society is not ready for two men, especially if one is black," he said.
Ehtel Halliste, a spokesman for the Estonian Foreign Ministry, expressed regret. "Unfortunately we can do nothing about bad manners on the street," he said.
The Handelsblad cited a report by the US embassy in Tallin, which referred to a series of incidents in which black embassy personnel had been threatened by neo-Nazis and skinheads.
Glaubnitz is to move to the Consulate-General in Montreal, Canada.
