I just wondered if any of you guys have had trouble with Ransomware. I, don't know if it is a computer virus per se, but a pain in the ass/arse/backside nevertheless. You click on the wrong website and it locks up your pc, saying you need to send some amount of money to a certain place and they will unlock your PC. They pose as federal police in various countries. Generally if you do a little research, you can defeat the threat. A new variant changes all the jpg, pdf, and certain other files on your PC(in my case, on an auxiliary drive) in the same manner and instructs you to send money so they can unlock it. I solved the problem, but not without aggravation.

ANYTHING IMPORTANT?? KEEP IT BACKED UP!!

(I pray this post has not upset our moderator too much)

Had that couple times. Poorly worded and kinda funny actually.
Got past my McAfee the last time. Finally bought a Mac.

How did you solve the problem and which websites did you click on? I use avast free antivir, which gives a warning for some websites. If I get a problem, the best solution would be to go to a computer or software shop and ask them to fix it?

I kid you not:

bleepingcomputer.com

Then look for Spamhaus Ransomware Removal Guide

The general process is to install a free antivirus program, ensure the virus (or whatever) is gone, then run a program that unencrypts your files.

Print out the five pages of instructions, get a cup of coffee, then read and type carefully. Yes, I got my porn back, and I also got my tax forms back for the last seven years...I was very happy. I hope none of you must go through this.

Tumblr and BlogSpot.com seem to be completely safe. I would avoid any other porn site until the antivirus folks can keep up with the problem. I use webroot, which seems to catch the problem SOMETIMES.

I have no problems, I have two laptops, one for work one for play.
When the play one goes down, it gets wiped and all reinstalled.

Any files I want to keep are always backed up on an external drive.
