I must say this article resonated with me, especially given that spoken Mandarin and written Chinese is analogous to Thai speaking and writing. "Many learners ... give up. [Some who persist] will have some chance of succeeding since they have the kind of mindless doggedness and lack of sensible overall perspective that it takes" - http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/72bb2fa8-c780 ... ab7de.html (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/72bb2fa8-c780-11e2-be27-00144feab7de.html)

As far as I know, what we call "Chinese" is Mandarin or Cantonese or another language that is spoken in China.

Without access to the article, this topic is useless for most of us.

Sooty, let's face it: You don't like me and I don't much care for you but I think it is time we stop the bleed here. I have stopped even answering attacks. You and some others continue on the downhill road and I can't stop you but I will not retaliate anymore. You just can't help yourself, can you?

If you can't see the difference then I can't help you.

Sooty lacks the intelligence to understand the difference. Kjun was not responding to Sooty's criticism of him personally or anything he had posted in this thread.

And as for replying to a poster when he said he would not do so, just go here to see his hypocricy and stupidity:

"You just can't help yourself, can you?"

No, obviously not!

So who is the bedwetter now?? :sign5:

I wonder if the OP had the "mindless doggedness" to find his way to the end of the article...

So what language should English speakers learn? Any language. None will have EnglishтАЩs international currency, but in an age when so many are speaking and working in English as a second language, it helps to have a second language too. Why? So that you know what your colleagues, fellow conference delegates and negotiators are going through, how tiring their working days are and how impressive their linguistic accomplishment is.

Poorly educated gogo boys would fall into this category too.

I got the quinella (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/quinella) - kjun12 and a447. Absolutely fabulous

Why yes, Sen Yai, always willing to discuss an approaching death (oops, no, sorry, can't talk about that), how corrupt Thaksin is (oh no, they're mostly Red Shirt supporters who'll just argue how corrupt the Yellow Shirts are), um ... err ... How stingy Indian customers are? Well worth learning the local language for that.
