The new Pope Francis is unlikely to be more progressive than any of his predecessors. He is said to be "unwaveringly orthodox" in his views about sexual morality, abortion, same-sex marriage, and contraception. He once described adoption by gays as a form of discrimination against children. Even the Argentine president thought this statement a it too much and told him off in public for it. He has also been accused of being party to the disappearance of two Jesuit priests (he himself if a Jesuit) during the period of Argentina's military dictatorship. It will be interesting to see what he does as pope about clearing up the mess the Roman Catholic church is in. Any claim he makes to the moral high ground must be suspect, of course.
