COURT 13-YEAR CRIMINAL TRIAL
Saudi gems case verdict today. The Criminal Court will today issue a verdict in the cases against Chalor Kerdthes and six other policemen accused of embezzlement in the Saudi gems theft case. The six others are Pol Col Prasert Chantarapitak, Pol Maj Thani Sidokbuab, Pol Capt Ritthisart Kaewdej, Pol Snr Sgt-Maj Teng Tippalawong, Pol Sgt-Maj Sanut Kawicha and Pol Sgt-Maj Sawek Kanthama.
A former police officer, Chalor was in charge of finding items of jewellery stolen from the Saudi royal family by a Thai worker in 1989. The trial has lasted for 13 years.
In a related case, the Criminal Court found Chalor guilty of masterminding the abductions and murders of Darawadee and Seri Srithanakhan, the wife and son of Santi, a jeweller, and sentenced him to life in prison. The Appeals Court, however, ruled early this year that the former police officer be put to death. Chalor and his accomplices abducted them to pressure Santi to reveal the whereabouts of the stolen jewels. The mother and son were held captive at a resort in Sa Kaeo and later beaten unconscious and put in Darawadee's Mercedes Benz. The sedan was parked in the middle of a highway in Saraburi, where it was hit by a truck.
The Thai worker, Kriangkrai Techamong, was convicted of theft and sentenced to five years in prison, and Santi was given three years in prison for receiving stolen items.
