Trip report 14.09.2012 Ancient City

If you havenтАЩt heard of Ancient City (Ancient Siam / Mueang Boran / р╣Ар╕бр╕╖р╕нр╕Зр╣Вр╕Ъ р╕гр╕▓р╕У), itтАЩs an open-air museum (the worldтАЩs largest) or park in the shape of Thailand with replica of monuments (placed geographically correctly) from all over Thailand and creative design buildings.

14.09.2012 Friday Bangkok and Samut Prakan Ancient City

We get up early (for me, that would be anything before 10 am) and have lunch together.

The fastest (under 1 hour) and cheapest (about 200 Baht) way to go there is by taxi.

But I didnтАЩt know that, so we tried by public transport: 11:38 walk past Malaysia hotel, 11:54 MRT Lumpini departure, (via MRT Sukhumvit, change to BTS Asok), 12:07 BTS Asok departure, 12:27 BTS Bearing arrival. Walk to the next bus stop (10 min) and wait (10 min) for bus 511. A bus 511 drives past, but does not stop! As the trip would include a change to mini-bus at the end of line 511, I decide to take a taxi for the remaining part (15 km, 120 Baht). We arrive at Ancient City at 13:13.

Entry is 500 Baht for Farang and 350 for Thai, this includes rent for bicyle (50 Baht). There are golf carts with 2, 4 or 6 seats available for rent. They have a guide sheet in English and Thai with a map and names of all 116 monuments (you can find this information on their webpage as well).

In the background, you can see an artificial mountain with a miniature of Preah Viharn and a flag:

From the mountain you have a view over the museum, can see Bangkok skyscrapers at the horizon and can see where the Chao Phraya flows into the Gulf of Thailand:

The mountain is man-made and the inside is empty. At the rear, you can look through the door (and enter, but itтАЩs dark inside) and see plenty of scaffolding and concrete pillars inside:

Closing time is 5 pm, so we had to leave, I did miss a few things.

This place complements Mini Siam in Pattaya (where you can find monuments downscaled to 1-2 meter size).

On our return by taxi (17:20 тАУ 18:40, 240 Baht + 20 Baht toll, 30 km + 30 min less than 6 km/h due to rain and traffic jam) we passed the Erawan Museum and saw Kanchanaphisek Bridge and drove over King Bhumibol Bridge (this way is shorter and faster than via Sukhumvit). Both bridges are worth seeing, however there was heavy rain when we passed.

Return to my room and say goodbye. I go to Babylon Sauna. Have some chats and the manager shows me the various rooms types they have. In the gym, there are two cute boys, so I do some exercise to oogle at them. They donтАЩt notice me (or have no interest), but I will have sore muscles for two days! No action for me. Later Balcony and X-Size, leave alone.

To be continued.

Thanks for the report, christian - seems like an interesting place (not that I'm likely to leave my barstool and actually visit), but I enjoy your reports.
