View Full Version : Scots Catholic Bishop + Spokesman say 'Be Gay, Die early'

July 27th, 2012, 15:25
The Scottish Government has announced they will introduce legislation to enable same sex/equal marriage in participating Churches and all Registry Offices - whereas previously only "Civil Partnerships" have been permitted.

This comes after a ferociously bigoted campaign against it by the Catholic Church, Church of Scotland, Moslems etc - despite it being made clear to them that they can "opt-out" and they would not be forced to conduct same sex marriages.

The legislation is certain to pass as there is all-party support with a big majority in Parliament for it.

On the day that this was announced, it emerged that the Bishop of Paisley (soon to be the Archbishop of Glasgow) had blackened the name of a deceased gay MP/shadow Minister who died at the age of 44 from Acute Pancreatitis. The clear insinuation from the Bishop was that he died because he was a "practising homosexual" and as such his physical and mental health was in danger! There is added irony in that the deceased politician was an ex-roman catholic priest!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-18996913

But it gets worse - in an effort to calm the ensuing furore, the Catholic church put a spokesman up on live TV - who then proceeded to dig the Church into an even bigger hole by declaring that "Gay behaviour leads to early death...and gay people will die 10-20 yrs early":

http://news.stv.tv/scotland/112513-gay-behaviour-leads-to-early-death-catholic-church-spokesman-claims/

Uproar has ensued with this story leading the national news for 2 or 3 nights running - the latest development is that the Bishop has apologised "if anybody took offence" (in other words not an apology at all - he is maintaining the slur and is only apologising that some people took offence). The deceased politician's partner isn't letting this lie and has demanded a public apology and the Bishop's resignation. In response the Bishop has offered to meet the deceased politician's partner "in private" after slandering the MP in public.

This is going to run for a while yet!

And I thought, only US politicians say such things.

Just an update - the Catholic Bishop shooting his mouth off about the alleged gay conspiracy of silence over how being gay will kill you , has now been discovered to have hushed up homosexual behaviour within the Clergy.

"THE present and incoming archbishops of Glasgow were dragged into a fresh row over the Roman Catholic Church and homosexuality last night, after it emerged the former head of the college which trains Scots priests in Rome was allowed to keep his parish despite a drunken homosexual incident deemed "totally unworthy of a priest".

Why are you surprised? This is the same group that did and continues to cover up massive child abuse by priest. I give the USA credit in that we have started to send them to jail for this.

Now if the Italians would only do the same for Ratzinger.......... :dontknow:

Khor tose, you misunderstand me - I'm not surprised in the least, I'm just pointing out the irony.

On a slightly lighter note it was great to see three Protestant Ministers, wearing full clerical garb walking in support of Gay people in the Pride Parade in Belfast yesterday - that was a first ! And even more important as there was the usual Free Presbyterian protest held along the route as well, but great to see at least someone from " the church" saying it's ok to be gay and religious if that's your preference! Long may it continue.

Got to say... Reading some of the things this bishop's quoted as saying in the articles makes me wonder what f*cking planet he's on!

As for the Catholic Church covering up and even knowingly enabling abuse... it's just utterly disgusting.

I've read of there being a fair bit of pressure on this organisation in Europe and the US. Now the momentum is building in Australia and there's some pretty terrible stuff coming out in the press all the time. I hope it leads to a meaningful outcome.

I try to be tolerant of people's religious beliefs in person, but it's getting to the point when being Catholic is almost offensive. I mean, in my mind, when someone declares themselves to be Catholic, I almost liken it to them declaring themselves to be....deleted

The latest act of the Catholic Church in Scotland is that now the Scottish Govt has bravely and rightly ignored the concerted homophobic campaign mobilised to flood the Same Sex Marriage consultation, the leader of Scotland AND the UK's catholics - Cardinal Keith O'Brien - has gone in a sulk and says he will now refuse to talk to the Govt.

Included in his repertoire are gems such as:
Describing gays as "captives of sexual aberrations"
Describing embryo research as "Frankenstein experiments"which would lead to "human/animal hybrids"
Describing Same-Sex marriage as "akin to legalising slavery" a тАЬgrotesque subversion" which would inevitably lead to "three-way marriages"

Now that he refuses to talk to Govt., if he could stretch to shutting his Clerical Cakehole altogether, I might start to believe in God after all.

Ordinarily, as an Englishman, I wouldn't dream of suggesting an idea first dreamed up by an English King - especially a pure Norman one - but has Alex Salmond considered the Henry the Second solution to turbulent priests?

If the Cardinal O'Brien carries this outburst of Mediaevalism - having the government of the day denounced from every pulpit in the land and so on - to its logical conclusion, he'll lobby to have the pope put the whole of Scotland under a papal interdict. One of the effects of that would be to prevent the Catholic Church from conducting marriages in Scotland but, as that would only affect the straights, it needn't bother us.

Describing Same-Sex marriage as "akin to legalising slavery"

Clearly this Bishop has not read his Bible, a book that specifically advocates slavery:

Leviticus 25:44 "As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are round about you".
and that M'Lud is my defence for keeping that young Lao man in my bedroom cupboard. :thumbleft:

UPDATE:

The Bishop's boss - Scottish Cardinal Keith O'Brien, has won an Award!

"Bigot of The Year"

The Cardinal obviously does not do irony - he has decribed the gay rights organisation who gave him the award as "intolerant" :sign5:

Please don't credit the Norman kings - William I, William II (allegedly gay), Henry I and Stephen - with this one. Their successor Henry II was the son of the Count of Anjou and hence the first of the Angevin (a.k.a. Plantagenet) dynasty.

But Henry's knights' solution of what to do with annoying clergy was certainly radical!

Is anyone here surprised that this Catholic cardinal has now been accused by four current or former priests and seminarians of "inappropriate behavior"? See e.g., http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/ho ... 08378.html (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/priests-claim-cardinal-was-inappropriate-8508378.html)

Classic case of pots and kettles!

February 24th, 2013, 15:56
Surprised no, greatly amused YES.

4 Priests have complained that the good Cardinal made sexual advances to them - and presumably never even proposed marriage!!

News flash that Cardinal O'Brien has stood down from The Age Tuesday The link gives a TV interview
http://www.theage.com.au/world/britains ... 2f2c4.html (http://www.theage.com.au/world/britains-cardinal-obrien-steps-down-20130225-2f2c4.html)

Cardinal rejects 'inappropriate' allegations
Britain's most senior Catholic cleric is accused of 'inappropriate behaviour' by several priests who would like to see him resign immediately.

LONDON: Cardinal Keith OтАЩBrien, the top Catholic official in Britain, is stepping down a day after publication of reports of тАШтАШinappropriateтАЩтАЩ behaviour in his relations with priests working for him.
OтАЩBrien, an outspoken critic of gay rights, is alleged to have made unwelcome advances against priests reporting to him, the BBC reported.
The Vatican announced on Monday that Pope Benedict XVI had accepted Cardinal OтАЩBrienтАЩs resignation.

тАШтАШThe Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI has accepted on the 18 February 2013 the resignation of His Eminence Cardinal Keith Patrick OтАЩBrien from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh,тАЩтАЩ a statement said.

The cardinal will not take part in the election for a successor to the Pope - leaving Britain unrepresented in the election.
Cardinal OтАЩBrien said: тАШтАШI do not wish media attention in Rome to be focused on me - but rather on Pope Benedict XVI and on his successor.тАЩтАЩ
The cardinal missed celebrating Sunday Mass in St MaryтАЩs Cathedral in Edinburgh, which marked Pope BenedictтАЩs eight years in office, ahead of the pontiff stepping down this week.
The resignation of BritainтАЩs most senior Roman Catholic cleric in the wake of allegations of improper behaviour creates a crisis for the Church in Scotland, and represents a heavy blow to the wider Church as it battles to shore up its reputation ahead of the papal election or тАШтАШconclaveтАЩтАЩ.
The conclave is already expected to be difficult in the circumstances created by PopeтАЩs unprecedented resignation.

You can legally do that in Oregon and I would sure like to see that possible everywhere, but what does this have to do with the Catholic Bishop?

Did you miss the thread title - '"Be gay die early" says Catholic bishop'. My sentiments exactly.

The Cardinal has apologized and admitted that his conduct fell below the standards expected of him, but doesn't include telling the truth and not being a total hypocrite in those standards of conduct. No surprise there, really.

The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/ma ... t-catholic (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/mar/22/keith-obrien-priest-catholic)) now reports that the Cardinal's relationship with the former priest who turned him in are both "long-standing" and "physical," and goes back more than 30 years. The former priest and the three serving priests are described as being "part of an inner circle."

The hypocrisy is staggering.

Just thought I would update this thread which I started waaaaaaaay back:

Former winner of the "Bigot of the Year" award and still the most senior Roman Catholic in the UK - (still) Cardinal Keith O'Brien - having resigned in disgrace amidst a flurry of allegations that he forced his sexual attentions on at least 4 fellow clergymen - has now been ordered by the Vatican to leave the Country.

Instead of seeing out his days comfortably esconced in an East Lothian grace and favour cottage (highly appropriate) - it appears that he is to be exiled. It has not been revealed where he is being sent but hopefully it won't be the Virgin Islands as none of the male ones would be safe.

As far as I know - and I was quite well acquainted with him - he had not actually been defrocked but had chosen to leave the UK before matters might have got that far... He was, incidentally, pretty hopeless at running the bar.

Are we talking about the same one?

Wasn't it directly across the main road from BT - up a side-soi - towards the Welcome Plaza?

He had not also been involved in some kind of armed robbery too?

LOL - what a place!!

Doesn't remind me of mine!

There must have been TWO priests running Pattaya gay bars, then... Mind you, that's not so surprising when you think about it!
