Beginning three paragraphs as unnessary, revealing identity, and several other violations I don't even have time to list! DaBoss
Australia announced the world's first treatment for 12/13 year old boys with a catch up for some boys in the first year who may be older.

It is not a cure. It is more rampant that many realized. I will look for the old threads and post more info.

This quote is from the Melbourne gay press. It was however published in all the major press outlets.

More misinformation from a master of the art theHPV vaccine was inded developed in Oz and first applied to girls however it was always gender neutral and the decision to use it on boys was simply one of cost it is not a new vaccine not 2012 it has been around a number of years and used for girls boys could always get vaccinated if their parent wanted to pay I think $400 but now it's available on Medicare the same as for girls get your facts straight wombat its NOT a world first vaccine FOR BOYS.

In the USA the HPV vaccine has been available for boys since Oct 2009. In Nov 2011 the Center for Disease Control recommended its use for boys and young men up to 26 yo. In Feb 2012 the Center for Disease Control gave explicit recommendations for the vaccination of boys 11 yo and up. Cost may or may not be covered by the individual's insurance policy since there is no national coverage as may be the case in Australia.

Being available for boys compared to a formal program of National Immunisation Program for all boys in that age groups, is a big difference.

Here is the official advice from the Health department. http://ahha.asn.au/news/hpv-vaccine-extended-boys.All news outlets carried the story.

HPV vaccine extended to boys
Date:
Thu, 12/07/2012
Spokesperson:
Minister for Health, The Hon Tanya Plibersek MP

In a world first, Australian schoolboys will be able to get the successful Gardasil┬о vaccine, which will protect them against developing a range of cancers and bolster the effectiveness of this vaccine in women.

Starting next school year, the Gillard Government will fund the vaccine for 12 and 13-year-old boys through school-based programs under the National Immunisation Program. Year 9 boys will also be able to get the vaccine at school under a catch-up program for the next two years.

Minister for Health Tanya Plibersek said providing the HPV vaccine to boys would protect them and increase the effectiveness of the vaccination program for girls.

тАЬEvery parent wants their child to be healthy and that is why the Australian Government is delivering the best protection we have against HPV related cancer through this vaccine,тАЭ said Ms Plibersek.

тАЬBy building on AustraliaтАЩs world-class immunisation program, weтАЩre stopping preventable HPV related disease and cancers, and that makes a difference to the quality of life of our families.

тАЬAlready the HPV vaccine has had an impact тАУ significantly reducing the number of lesions that lead to cervical cancer amongst women in the vaccinated age group. It is estimated that a quarter of new infections will be avoided by extending the vaccine to boys,тАЭ said Ms Plibersek.

An Australian innovation, the vaccine protects against four important genotypes of the human papillomavirus (HPV).

The HPV vaccination program for boys is expected to cost $21.1 million over four years. This will include an information campaign, a vaccine register and monitoring of adverse reactions.

Ms Plibersek said the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee had recommended last year that the HPV vaccination program be extended to boys following a review of its cost effectiveness.

She said the Australian Government would work with all states and territories to implement the boysтАЩ vaccination program in high schools.

I believe your link is not working. Did Australia develop the vaccine and were they the fist to offer it?

The link at the top of the page works.
The way I read it, and I could be incorrect, is that it was developed a few years ago and available to those who paid. This article does not state that Australia is the first country to develop it or offer it as the title infers BUT that Australia is the first country to start a PROGRAM that will offer it to kids in that risk group. As I said, I may be wrong, it's too early in the morning to say for sure. :dontknow:

The vaccine has been available to those who could afford it.

But it has been made available as part of the Australian National Immunisation Program. This is an all inclusive program and it it is free to all boys at year12/13, as was the girls 5 years ago.

Here is an extensive official note for boys and girls in Australia.Too long to cut and paste

That link had an extra ".All" on the end -- a run on sentence.

Correctly, http://ahha.asn.au/news/hpv-vaccine-extended-boys

Many people are quite opposed to the overuse of these vaccines, by the way. An overzealous big brother government mentality forcing vaccines on everyone is a major fear here.

The title of this thread is misleading.
Maybe Lonleywombat is not a native English speaker and it is a language barrier....?

The Gardasil HPV vaccine has been around for a long time. It was approved for use in the USA by females back on June 8, 2006. It was approved for use by males on October 16, 2009.

I believe lonleywombat's intent was to say that the Australian government is the first to have a program to pay for the HPV vaccine for males as well as females. Big difference than what the title says...that Australia has the worlds first HPV vaccine for boys.

A good summary on the wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardasil

Use in males

Gardasil is also effective in males, providing protection against genital warts, anal cancer, and some potentially precancerous lesions caused by some HPV types.[5][17][21][22] An ongoing study of 4,065 males demonstrated the efficacy of Gardasil in males who did not have HPV infection prior to vaccination.[8] The vaccination is expected to protect against penile cancer and anal cancer caused by included HPV types, and research in this area is ongoing.[8]

In December 2008, Merck asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for permission to market the vaccine in the United States for males between ages 9 to 26,[23] and the FDA approved the request on October 16, 2009.[5][24][25][26][27][28] In the UK, HPV vaccines are licensed for males aged 9 to 15 and for females aged 9 to 26.[29]

Gardasil is in particular demand among gay men, who are at significantly increased risk for genital warts and anal cancer caused by HPV.[30]

A 2005 study in San Francisco, California found that 95% of HIV-infected gay men also had anal HPV infection, of which 50% had precancerous HPV-caused lesions.[31]

Type 16 is also associated with oropharyngeal squamous-cell carcinoma, a form of throat cancer.[32]

Bruce is correct that there are well founded fears about the overuse of vaccines, just like many other medications (antibiotics, etc).
It will be interesting to see if other governments decide to fund the long existing vaccine for boys as well as girls. I think it is great, as long as it is not mandatory....

Deleted post. Who got it where is irrelevant.
The man who got it and first openly may have discussed is he a teen? No. Does he live in Australia? I don't know and personally do not care. Did he give permission for his story to be told again? No. Is it in any way relevant to the story? No.

According to what he's said in the past, he's a born and bred native English speaker from down under. Clarity and coherence is the cause you're looking for...
