"Everything that goes up must come down" proverb (prior to spaceflight)

Sadly everything that goes down does not necessarily go up again. Is there a currency Viagra around?

Offshore investors spend Bt50 billion, push baht higher

Massive net foreign buying of local stocks has topped Bt50 billion this year, boosting the baht to close near an eight-month high yesterday, but the central bank said it did not intervene in the currency market.

Bank of Thailand Governor Pridiyathorn Devakula signalled the market that the baht had appreciated too rapidly, and the central bank would try to keep it moving in line with market mechanisms.

The baht was up 1.08 per cent to Bt39.45 against the greenback shortly after trading started yesterday. It has risen 4.15 per cent from the end of last year. It was also 0.56 per cent and 0.33 per cent stronger against the Japanese yen and the euro, respectively.

At 1pm yesterday, the dollar was at Bt39.475 to the US dollar, recovering after the governorтАЩs statement. It was trading just above an eight-month high of Bt39.40 before the statement. The baht closed at Bt39.35 in Asian trading.

Pridiyathorn insisted that the stronger baht was not being caused by speculation in the foreign-exchange market, but rather by capital flowing into equities, as foreign investors shifted their focus to Asian markets, including Thailand.

About Bt50 billion has poured into the stock market over the past seven days, compared with Bt110 billion to Bt120 billion of foreign net buying for all of last year.

Pridiyathorn said the Stock Exchange of Thailand was attractive now because of low price to earnings (P/E) ratios and positive economic fundamentals....

The baht will hit 80 to the pound before 2006 is out. Thailand is very vulnerable to the oil situation. The oil situation is very vulnerable to EVERYTHING. America is vulnerable to all that, to say nothing of the hand of God. Britain is not. I predict the ┬г will rise against the dollar. The dollar will fall against everything. The baht will drop because of: political upset; terrorism; constitutional matters; tourism drop because of well published and occasional murders of European women;and various levels of mismanagement due to graft. I will apologise in January 2007, if I am still around, and wrong. Meanwhile I shall buy LloydsTSB/Tesco/Premier Oil - the rise in that lot will pay for my flight in 2007.

Well, pround to say mine is always up in just a few minutes after it has gone down. All it needs is a pair of soft lips.....

The pound is doing well against US dollar by the way. It was 1.73 last week, and is 1.78 this week.

Further to my comment just above notice the way Oil is going viz: attacks on oil places in Nigeria; an inevitable air strike by someone on Iran unless they shut down their weopons programme. Israel, having been threatened by a poser in power with irradication has stated they will not allow nuclear weopons in Iran. We all know what that means - a pre-emtive strike. Remember how America had to base anti-missil Patriots in Isreal to STOP ISRAEL JOINING IN!!!!!!! And Thailand has to buy almost ALL its oil... the baht ain't stable. We live in scary times.

Interesting about the oil.
I thought the baht was propped up by the rising price of gold, you know, all those gold chains you see all about ...

January 18th, 2006, 03:34
Gold is a foolishness and entirely irrelevant. There is very small-time goldmining in Thailand (Greece accounts for more). If all the gold in the world turned into rice pudding it would not feed the people of Malta for a year. But oil! Ah... all those expensive ships in the Thai navy and the air force, the handful of tanks, the cars, the tuk-tuks, the millions of vehicles, the trucks, the power stations... Thailand has to BUY its oil. Thailand's economy would go into bust with a sudden drop of the Tourist Trade and a leap in oil. Now, unless the tourist trade is hammered by a few more stupid murders by mindless ones or some form of constitutional catastrophe Thailand can scrape through an oil disaster... but, the main thread of my argument, the baht will go to 80 to ┬г1 QUICK. All property owners in Thailand will be hit by a decline in value, and tourists will, of course surge on lower prices... but in the short term I stand by 80 baht to the ┬г by this time next year.
