View Full Version : Singapore Suggestions

American Teacher-old

Happy weekend to all! Listen, I am considering a quick trip to Singapore and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on cheap flights or gay happenings. I know there isn't a huge gay community -- and I am not looking for any sex tourism. I am just interested in supporting gay businesses -- ie: bar/restaurants, bed & breakfasts/hotels, etc.

Any and all help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Fondly,
Chris

Not a huge gay community? I guess you haven't been to Singapore in a while!

May 20th, 2006, 13:35
The majority of bars are located in the Chinatown vicinity. You may therefore want to consider staying in that area. I would recommend The Scarlet Hotel, a stunning gay-friendly boutique hotel ideally located a short walk from two MRT stations, Club Street, Food Street and a number of the gay bars. At S$185 plus taxes per room per night The Scarlet is probably not cheap by Thailand standards but excellent value as Singapore hotels go. May 20th, 2006, 13:40
I don't think Chris has sold enough Niddy burgers to stay there.

May 20th, 2006, 13:52
If on a budget, I recommend staying in the whore and food district of GEYLANG (not at all gay) and take the subway everywhere (can taxi home after midnight). Decent room can be had there under USD 40.

May 20th, 2006, 13:59
The Amara Hotel is a 4 star hotel also in China town near the gay bars.. and right next to the MRT station. I think I paid about $85 per night for a Hugh nice room with separate tub and shower. First class all the way. The BF and I found the gay nightlife to be closeted and quiet (compared to thailand) and also very "sticky".

May 20th, 2006, 14:13
We usually visit Singapore in December/January and mid March and have always found the bars to be very quiet. Perhaps we go out too early and leave too early?

May 20th, 2006, 15:34
My Singapore suggestion - WMD?

It's such a wonderfully gay-friendly place they hold "the Nation" party outside.

So they're more liberal at the moment - believe me, it's a cycle.

The Welyn Garden City of the tropics.

Ok, you've got my attention now. Tell me more about Vietnam. Where to go? Where to stay? Gay life (non-sex-industry if possible).

Thanks!

if you want a cheaper hotel in chinatown, try hotel 81. the infamous short time hotel of singapore has gone mainstream. the chinatown branch is one of its newest. should be around SGD 99 per night. just a stone's throw away from sphere (the bathhouse formerly known as vclub).

May 20th, 2006, 18:29
Chris please do not be influenced by this garbage. There are probably more human rights abuses and less political freedom in Vietnam than in Singapore. I fully agree with boycotting radically oppressive countries like Burma.

If, as has been suggested, we should confine our travel to gay-friendly countries then we will have VERY limited options indeed. South Africa is one of the few (only?) countries to specifically have gender rights written into its constitution.

After seeing all of the HOT guys posting their profiles on sgboy.com it seems like every boy in Singapore from 18-30 must be gay. I am certainly planning to add a visit on my next trip to Asia.

www.fridae.com (http://www.fridae.com) has very good gay profiles of many big cities in Asia. You can probably find out most of what you need to know by poking around there a bit.

"After seeing all of the HOT guys posting their profiles on sgboy.com it seems like every boy in Singapore from 18-30 must be gay..."

Yeah, but they'll have absolutely ZERO interest in YOU.

Yeah, but they'll have absolutely ZERO interest in YOU.

this is very true in singapore. if you go to 1-7 or towel club, most of the cute young things there will just wait and parade around and wait and parade around and wait and ... you got the point?

May 20th, 2006, 23:19
Maybe they display "zero interest" because unlike Thai bar boys they live in a more affluent country and are gainfully employed in a field other than prostitution. This gives them the freedom of choice with whom they have sex. Hang on, did'nt someone say a few posts back that Singaporeans had no rights??

May 20th, 2006, 23:29
Non-commercial Thai guys are readily available and willing anywhere in Thailand. Singapore is sticky city. It's Chinese for Chinese, they won't even give the time of day to their Malay and Indian compatriates.

May 21st, 2006, 00:18
Yeah, it is stickier, but if you like Malays or Indians, there will be more interest.
Also, it really is worth visiting at least once. Some good museums, one of the best zoos in the world, fantastic food (one of the top food cities on earth), easy modern transport, and interesting for Thais to visit to see a more westernized Asian nation.

May 22nd, 2006, 04:27
Singapore in my opinion is a very underrated place, I find it a fabulous place, very westernised and conservative in thinking, similar to the UK, I would say, and a similar scene as London on a lesser scale of course. They have fairly good saunas, but you need to know what time to go, a few good bars, and a few good late night clubs, The Fullerton Hotel has a Sunday night thing going which attracts the muscle boi crowd but doesn't get going till well into the early hours of Monday morning.

With regard to hotels, I stay at the old Stamford Hotel which has a shopping mall attached to it, think its called Raffles city, where there is cruising a like. I generally meet guys on gay.com, some real cute fit guys on there, I tell you. With regard to food, I aint got a clue, I tend to eat what I find, if I am with someone then I let them suggest a place, but tend to forget where we have been after.

With regard to flights I tend to to use the major airlines that have a stop-off in Singapore, for instance, on the internet look up Flights to Singapore on Thai Airlines or Malaysia Airlines if you are also visiting KL which I do. Similarly, look for flights to Bangkok using Singapore Airlines, that sort of thing. Also you have the cheap airlines like AirAsia, Tiger Airways, Jetstarairways, ValuAir.

I feel some of these asian guys look down on us in the west, they feel they are superior to us in the west. My understanding of that is that "they", strangely enough, are the ones that have a problem, and not "us". However, I don't have that problem with them anyway, I get anyone I want, by just using the old cliche of "how are you", then ..... it does it for me.

May 22nd, 2006, 22:35
Chris,

I suggest you have a meal here:

Uberburger Singapore (http://www.uberburger.com/home.htm)

And don't forget to take LOTS of notes...

May 22nd, 2006, 22:42
I think that burger is just too frou frou, what is that white sauce anyway? Egads!!!

May 22nd, 2006, 22:47
They have 101 different burgers on offer, as basic or as frou-frou as you want. But most importantly, they're actually GOOD.

May 22nd, 2006, 22:50
They have 101 different burgers on offer, as basic or as frou-frou as you want. But most importantly, they're actually GOOD.
101 choices may be over the top, but the meat and bread looks good.
Well, the idea is there for someone who wants to do it, gourmet burgers in Pattaya, who is game to try it for real?
Make sure the fries are gourmet too, OK?

May 23rd, 2006, 00:08

Even for non-commercial sex, Singapore Chinese have totally different personality than Thais. Most Thais are easy going, even if they are not intereted in you, they don't insult. But Singaporean will insult and look down on you.
I did not enjoy my trip in Singapore at all. Many small things added up to an unpleasant trip. for example, one hotel luggage porter asked for mandatory tips, before he would put his hand on my luggage.
(I encountered a similiar situation in Taipei, with a Taxi driver telling me NT$50 per piece if I wanted him to help loading luggage off his taxi car.)

The people in these countries do not know what "hospitality" means, when all they can think about is "money" and more "money". There is a reason for them to be more wealthy than Thailand. They don't have soul.

May 23rd, 2006, 01:02
But Singaporean will insult and look down on you.

I totally agree, but no more than I would at anyone else, we can all play that game, and I have some brilliant one liners for them.

May 23rd, 2006, 01:25
I agree with the others.. I found some of them friendly.. but very distant. They had Zero interest in me.. but they had no problem hitting on my Thai BF right in front of me as if I wasn't even there... I probably won't be going back, or if I do, it will be to shop and do more of the normal tourist thing, definitely not for the Gay night life LOL

the attitudes in the cruising places is different from that of the bathhouse. in the b.house, you will see a number of guys just displaying their hot bods, but once you show interest in them, they decline. and this is not because they are sticky. as i've seen lots of local getting rejected also. one might even think they are exhibitionists without the sex. :flower:

i guess the mall he was referring to was raffles city shopping center. however, since this is where most big international conference happens. there have been a large addtion of cctv :cyclopsani: around the place to monitor security. unless you are not shy to be seen cruising around the place, i suggest to give it a miss.

Penang is very, very NOT gay.

Interesting, since I just found this on the Utopia website...

"Penang Island, with its heritage treasure trove of George Town, the gold sand beaches of Batu Ferringhi, and the nearby town of Butterworth on the mainland, has everything that gay and lesbian travelers love: exquisite food including Nyonya Baba indigenous fusion cuisine; architectural treasures including the stupendous colonial mansions of Asia's formerly rich and famous tycoons; sun and fun on tropical beaches; shady hikes through botanical spice gardens and jungle forests; multi-ethnic neighborhoods that are safe and welcoming places to explore on foot, bike, or pedi-cab; fascinating shrines, temples and mosques built over generations by the port's prosperous merchants and fortune-seekers from as far away as Arabia and Armenia; shops, malls and museums filled with beautiful bargains; and more than a bit of gay scene and nightlife for holiday fun and frolic."

I guess once again, you didn't have your facts straight. Kind of like ALL your postings.

Chris

May 27th, 2006, 12:10
No, but that wouldn't have had any cheeseburger spam potential.
Who has the personal vendetta now? Chris Cheeseburger, I do think.
I have been all over Penang, also know Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.
Penang can be pleasant, and yes the food is fantastic, though the beaches suck (but even so better than Pattaya), and it is a very dead scene compared to KL or Singapore. But if you are hauling your boy chef, you have your own entertainment.
Bone Appetite!

No need to go to a bus station to eat in Penang!
Just ask a taxi to go to one of the main hawkers areas at night, an amazing scene, but not clean like Singapore. Bring diarrhea meds, but then again, you are probably used to it.

Penang is about as gay as one of your cheeseburgers!

But not as bitter and twisted as one big arsehole on this forum
Obviously too broke to afford a bit of companionship and too bitter to make friends.

As for Penang, i was there with a convention and had to be very careful.
There was a large shopping mall there which was interesting and fruitful, but nowhere to take anyone short time
I found both in Jakarta and Penang the malls chinese boys will hand around the escalators on upper floors.
The Indon boys are fascinated and want to see foreskin, and can be quite forward and follow you into the toilet
and stand beside you

Just like in BKK and Pattaya. That is why I prefer the boys from a bar to the freelancers, but when on business you have to go where you have to go, and make the best of it

May 28th, 2006, 09:18
I wouldn't even bother with so called "gay Penang" if with a bf. Just enjoy Penang for what it is, to me, the food is the top attraction, then the seedy decay of walking around old Georgetown is quite interesting. That Batu Faranghi beach is OK, but totally hetero, and not even worth going to even on a very short trip.

Actually, I do have one great food pick. A fantastic place to sample NONYA cuisine Penang is so famous for. This is NOT hawkers fare, it is a real restaurant and the dishes are totally different than hawkers. When I was there for a week with a friend, we went THREE times, and usually ordered 8 dishes to sample all the incredible new tastes. I still have the pictures and great memories of it. It is the kind of place locals go for a treat, but not expensive by farang standards at all. All taxi drivers know it, highly recommended. Close to Georgetown, not in central Georgetown, 5 to 10 minute taxi ride from central Georgetown.

I do recommend Penang, for all the reasons quoted above from our website. As for the gay scene, it was a breath of fresh air. Unpretentious, hot. Lots of local gays making dates on Intertnet (I even met a Thai guy who was there on business). Went to one gay sauna that had customers even in the afternoon and another that had just opened but was a huge facility. Surveyed half a dozen gay massage places. Cool gay-owned trendy restaurants. Classic old 5-star hotel for afternoon tea by the sea. It's a city I know I will be returning to again and again.

Singapore is a clean and efficient city where you can drink the tap water. But some Sings are so sticky they get excited only when they look in a mirror.
