Police last night raided a gay spa in Bangkok and arrested its owner and manager for allegedly operating an illegal adult entertainment business and supplying prostitutes.

Police said on Wednesday three undercover agents were sent to "Hero" spa on Sukhumvit Road in Wattana district. The first agent paid 600 baht to buy a one-hour massage service while the other two waited in the lounge.

The first agent went into a room with a male masseur, who talked the agent into having sex with him. After they agreed on a 1,000-baht fee the agent signalled a team of officers to make the arrest immediately.

Spa owner Dechmaitree Pornsuksirikul, 51, and manager Jaturong Palakawongse na Ayudhya, 34, were arrested.

Police also seized used condoms that were being sold at the spa.

Dechmaitree told investigators that he had opened the spa 10 years ago. The massage business turned into a gay spa because his staff did not earn enough money, he said.

The owner said he told the masseurs not to have sexual intercourse with their clients, but said he believed Thai society should accept prostitution as a legitimate business.

During the raid, police found a number of clients and about 30 masseurs in many rooms. They took drug tests and one of them tested positive.

One of the masseurs was also an illegal immigrant, police said.

They must have been late with their payments. One optimistic note. I was in Bangkok about 7-8 years ago and Babylon was raided and prominently reported in the Bangkok Post. At the risk of stating the obvious it is still going strong.

So, excuse my obvious stupidity re such things as I don't live in Thailand etc but the hell is all that about ?? I mean are raids like these just all 100% about Tea money and the likes or is there perhaps another reason or reasons that aren't perhaps instantly obvious to the outsider, such as maybe the local police captains brother is opening a competitive Spa next door and wants some help wiping out the competition or perhaps the local Mayor is up for re-election and wants to be seen to be a hard ass in cleaning up the place ?

As obviously to pick on one sole spa when the whole place is coming down with them just seems a little bit strange and obviously there must be SOME other reason behind it other than stopping some farang getting his rocks off as let's face it if they were going to do that they'd need a hell of a lot more policemen that they've already got - ( thank god ) - and yes I know the simple answer is " well TIT" and all that but that's why I'm asking the question so I can understand better ( that is if there's anything to actually understand other than a simple shake down of the poor business owner).

My understanding is that there is kind of a map. Go go bars, sex massage parlours and things that are shady and are on this map. They take into consideration the size, popularity and amount of cash they bring in and adjust their tea money accordingly.

There are several different police departments. For example in Pattaya there is Pattaya police, tourist, and I am not sure how many others. If the place is farang owned there is also immigration involved. Everyone gets a slice. Easiest way is to hire a lawyer, give it to them and they take care of it.

Stupidly, some don't want to donate to the police benevolent fund. Sometimes the department involved is not on the list as available to take donations, such as Pattaya isn't usually able to persuade the higher department in Bangkok.

You willnever know what happened and why.

Every once in a while it's good to let so many of the self-righteous, holier-than-thou type gays know that they are nothing more than common criminals along with the rest of us who make no such claim to these delusions and pretensions of sainthood.

Sounds like a well planned police sting, what with the undercover cop posing as a potential client and getting offered sex and all.

A little over the top though - surely all it really required was to get a certain SGT poster to poke his (rather extensive) nose through the curtain and the whole illicit operation would have been revealed for what it was.

1.well planned? This very same scenario has been used since years+more-for the most part in girlie such places (offering shower/massage).
2.there has been a similar raid about 1month ago to a same m2m msg place unknown to 99% of you, name was 8,5 [they have saakhaa=shops|) along Sri nakarin, also BKk (ever heard of that?)- and there ya-ice was found. later they rounded up the distributor, an ex-airline steward from Huay kwang.
Dont judge before you know more facts. But IMHo chances that Hero is to close are very low.

I think these raids are used as a warning to the business owner (and his competitiors ) what could happpen if payments/increases are not to the liking of the police !!

Nab was raided in the first few days of the new year -- and 3 people were randomly picked out to be tested for drug use !! (if they were serious the whole place would have been tested sim Dave last month i would have thought )

It struck me at the time that it looked like a sort of shot across the bows threat to the Nab owner by either a new police area boss (New Year can be a time for reshuffle ) OR mabye It was over a tea money increase (police boss have to deal with inflation too :laughing3: )

Probably the most concerning part of this raid. "Clients in many rooms" which means they checked them all out. If in the wrong place at the wrong time so easy to get personally 'charged' by police with anything that takes their fancy for a bit of graft money, or even have 'evidence' planted on you. If the management are to blame for the raid by not paying 'their dues' then they wouldn't get anymore of my business, when they are raking in cash from customers in dodgy (in terms of that which is technically illegal) grey areas like bars, agogos and massage places they should do everything they possibly can to keep 'law enforcement' away from their valued clients. It's not for the first time I have heard of farangs wallets being searched by police in so called 'raids'. Even in one roadside police stop a policeman asked if i had a wallet on me, i just said my pocket acted as my 'grapaw'(wallet).


OR mabye Venue specifically targeted, for which reason we can only guess, as we will never know. It's all about "maybe's" in that murky part of Thai dealings.

Geezer is a well respected member of all the gay forums with alot of Thailand experience to call on with more relevant information on things about Gay Thailand in 10 posts than these two have in 1,000 posts.

The police in Pattaya do a pretty good job i think (numbers wise they are very poor) in relation to the amount of people living/ vacationing here ( from what ive read in the local Pattaya Papers ) and they do a pretty good job in keeping the peace here -- considering all the substances that people (visiting or not ) put into their bodies !!


But to suggest that they raided a gay place so that they could see what the "gays " were up to is just plain nonsense (my God the Thai people are just so versatile when it comes to sex ) and as i said you are only proving NewA right !!

I talked to one of the boys who works there last Saturday and he told me it would re-open on Monday. I called Hero yesterday but no one answered the phone. Not sure what's going on.

I had one of the "massage" boys over at my house today. He says that it was a problem with the police in that a new senior officer has taken over the disctict and was not being properly greased. They will reopen on April 1.

Thank you. Good to have this confirmed. I have read on other web sites that other massage venues have been "visited" by the authorities but apparently no shutdowns. I was in Bangkok in the mid 2000's when there was one of these periodic crack downs. On that occasion Babylon was raided with a full coverage in the Bangkok Post and the massage venues "visited". I went to the V Club one afternoon and the police had only just left and the venue was closed that afternoon but resumed normal trading the next day. Such is life in Thailand.
