The arrival and Departure areas are on different levels. Once you've retrieved your luggage, just exit the baggage area, then take the escalator downstairs to the departure area.

Um, that'd be 'take the escalator upstairs to the departure area'.

Going down (behave yourselves) would take you to the first floor and the public transpo lines.

Both domestic and international are in the same terminal. And as cameroncat pointed out, arrivals and departures are on different levels. When you get upstairs to departures, if you are facing toward the terminal (looking inward) the domestic check-in counters will be at the far end toward your left.

Arrivals are on level 2 and departures are on level 4. When you get through customs and exit go to your right. Then go up to departures level 4 and look for the area around doors 1 or 2 for Thai domestic check in.

Maybe this link can help you.

Are you sure you can not check-in your baggage all the way to Chiang Mai?. Who are you flying with from Cambodia?

Even if they did check your baggage through (highly unlikely), you still will have to make your way up to the 4th floor.

I think you can check your baggage all the way, I have done it Copenhagen-Bangkok-Chiang Mai on Scandinavian SAS and Thai. Even on two seperate tickets. But ask Bangkok Air. I think they will "interline".
If it is possible you don't have to care about Level 2 or Level 4, just go to the domestic transfer desk to pick up your boardingcard, which is inside the international terminal, just beside the transferdesk you will find pasport control and security and after that you will be in the domestic "terminal".

It is easy, and explained, if you follow the link I gave earlier.

For what it's worth, here is the website for Suvarnabhumi (pronounced Swanapoom) airport. It shows all 4 levels with area maps.

Cheers and have a ball.
