Mercure Hotel in Chang Phuak area would probably be a good choice for you as it is close to the main gay area in Chiang Mai and generally offers good value when booked from their website.

I agree with Ilz. I stayed many times in the old Novotel (now Mercure). Big beds in the rooms and friendly staff. Very near to the gaybars and free shuttle to the night market. Cheap airport transfer. I also like the buffets there.

Since you were last in Chiang Mai, the entire peak area has closed. However, there are 5 gay bars still at sleeze alley behind a new (since you have been there) hotel called D2. This area is also where the night market is, and much tourist stuff. So you want to stay here if you like to pick up in bars. There are many gay friendly hotels in the area, including the Porn Ping.
If it is go-go clubs you like then the Chan Puak area is were you can find Adams Apple. New My Way, Free Guy, and Circle Pub. This area is served by the oldest and one of the nicest gay hotels in town, The Lotus.

The Lotus is a small hotel, but does have some nice rooms and it is close to everything. The owner is not a lesbian (sorry scotguy) and it does have pictures of its room (sorry BL). The owner knows everyone in town and can give you great advice. However, there are many gay friendly hotels in the area and the Mercure is one of them. If you would like to give me some more personal information about your likes and dislikes, I might be able to give you some better specific advice. I live in Chiang Mai. PM only

(If you go to the lotus site they have a map on find me down at the bottom that will give you an idea of where the clubs are that are not at sleeze alley. Also check out this site for the most up-to-date complete information on Chiang Mai's gay scene.
