View Full Version : Getting a haircut in Thailand: where do you go and how much

I'm due for a haircut, and as I will come to Thailand for holiday soon I thought I might save some Euros by getting it in Thailand. However when I was in Thailand over the winter I got haircuts for about 150 Baht, which is probably much more than Thais spend (unless they are moneyboys and have fancy hairdos). This was in shops that were equipped like in Europe and the hairdresser spoke English.

What is the price for a haircut at simple shops and are they prepared for Farang? I have strong, curly brown hair and don't speak much Thai, do you think there will be any problems?

(It's not that I can't afford a haircut in Europe, but I'm curious if the amount my mother spends per year - she goes more often to the hairdresser and it is much more expensive - would be enough to get haircuts for me in Thailand for my entire life.)

If you are asking about the cost of a haircut in Thailand I really think you should sit back and seriously think about whether you are adult enough to travel all on your own christianpfc...

I bet this is how the Christianpfc hair-cutting routine goes:

1. A shortlist of hairdressers is carefully selected for location and price (gleaned from daft SGT members) - and a favoured coiffeur chosen.

2. Once the tonsorial trim has taken place, Christianpfc asks for the "cuttings" to take away with him.

3. On arriving home he stores them in an airtight plastic pag, sealed and labelled with date, time, name, location, and photo of barber shop.

4. The individual plastic bag of hair cuttings is filed and cross-indexed for future reference

Before that Scotty he probably has to call mummy to see if the price for the haircut is acceptable,,,

My suggestion would be to look for a busy shop and check the haircuts on a couple of the guys coming out of it. If they look acceptable, go in and try it. You can pantomime what you want done (i.e. showing a measurement with your thumb and forefinger and pointing to the top or sides of your head) and then just go with the flow. The worst that can happen is you'd need to have it cut again much shorter - and that's not such a bad idea in a warm tropical spot. I usually pay 50 or 60 baht, myself. Add a shave and you're closer to 100.

Be aware that sanitizing may not be what you'd want for a razor on your face that might nick you, but they've always changed blades before they've shaved me... not sure if it was a new one put on, though. :blackeye:

It's worth trying.

If you are in Pattaya, I like Jaeb barber shop. It is on Soi 17 just up from Soi Hollywood. There are also several barber shops on Soi Hollywood between Soi 17 and Pattaya South road. Jaeb charges falang's 80 baht. The barber I use speaks English and does a very good job.

Oh well, I guess you're living proof that she was once fucked by a man, so it must run in the family. However if you want a cheap haircut, there's a booth off BTS Sala Daeng as you walk into Thaniya that does them for 100 baht.

In Pattaya pay 50-60 baht near Tukcom and in BKK mostly 250 baht.

I really like the people just inside Villa Market. Soi 2 next to McDonalds and near the back of the parking lot. Good, quick and no complaints. 199 baht.
but if you have to ask how much for a haircut, you really should not be here.

No idea, but a decent haircut is about 250 baht in Bangkok. I am sure you can get one for 100 baht from a barber in a shop house, but I am talking about a professional stylist along with shampoo & conditioner.

As you can see by my photo they do a wonderful job?

I agree that Jaeb Barber shop is good. I also go there. Make sure you look for the sign Jaeb as there is a shop just a few doors down that says Mr. Barber. The shops look similar.

Modern hair salon - where a lot of the boys will go for their haircuts or hairstyles - will not do farang hair - so don't go there!
(Its on Soi 17 - near entrance to Soi Day night)

Maybe if you are in the company of a thaiboy they will do it - but i have seen them turn away many farang over the years...

Kid's Salon- across from La Cage in Sunnee will do farang hair... if your hair is suitable - he might even give you a gogo boy hair style!

This is the same joke as "do you store your pee in jars", right? Unfortunately, I still don't get it!

I should have been more specific: I meant in Bangkok.

but I am talking about a professional stylist along with shampoo & conditioner.
I want it quick, simple and cheap. Getting a haircut is a chore I have to go through a few times a year. I even thought about shaving my head (maybe twice a year), would save some time and money compared to going to a hairdresser. Live is not just: Now I have plenty of hair, and when I get older it will probably fall out. Why is hair so unevenly distributed over life?

but if you have to ask how much for a haircut, you really should not be here.
Just out of sport I will see if I can get the cheapest haircut of my life. Yes, saving money is a sport for me.

The hairdresser where I go is for my partner who has great hair (non Thai) and I have none (as the earlier photo shows) BUT, I have my feet done or more precisely foot done, as I only have one leg and a manicure while he is having his shampoo and cut and style. The place ... wait for it ... is called Cutey & Beauty, yikes! No really. I have told one of the owners that the name really has to change if you want to attract more farang.

Go on treat yourself.

Just ask for a SkinHead cut, easy to do, easy to keep and cheap.

In year's past, I have used a small barber shop close to the Pinnacle Hotel (just a few doors from the Pinnacle towards Rama IV). Can't remember the exact price but it was very reasonable. The guy did a good job for me.

geiz ist geil, jah, oder, und man braucht nur ganz wenig vernunft (kommt schon mit ''mehr haare als verstand'') dies zu bedenken:
This is just simple str8forward thinking: ANY area that has lots of farang-in big city BKK-will be used to the idiosincrasies of farang. I pay mostly 60 or 70 bt for a good cut (if I hit my favorite and I suspect gay barber, I also get my ears all trimmed, a good strong shoulder massage and maybe some slight whisper from him-all included)-rates are always posted outside and in english on those shops, the lowest price is for ''dek'' or ''naak rian''=kids/schoolstudents. The overwell known bekpekker (rucksackler) area around Khao sarn/banglamphu has dozens. They never cheat on price. In the Silom area you pay farang extra pricing. Siam area is hi-so ueberhip Thai fashion/fesjun, with corresponding pricing. Plus disdained looks if you are not after the latest uebertendy new line in fe-sjun.
ANYthing mainly involving labour=arbeit cost is extremely cheap in Thaild-reflecting the hourly price of labour (30 bt or so). That means also clothes repair, shoerepair, dentist, massage etc.

I used to use Pong, the queen from near Tukcom who moved down Pattaya Tai north side further than Friendship. He used to charge 60 then raised to 80. OK for the price but the guy started to get on my nerves.
My current cutter is in the building with KIss restaurant, 2nd road, corner of Pattaya North. There's a salon further down facing 2nd road. One lady is always there at night and they are open till 10. She's not the cheapest, 200 baht, and her English isn't as good as she thinks it is, so don't count on communicating well. However she will do something I value. If you ask her to she will cut your hair as she thinks is best based on the shape of your face, and you can also of course try to communicate general length. If you don't love that the first time, you then tell her what you want to change next time. Eventually you will probably like what she did (maybe 3 or 4 times max). Then tell her, and she will take a picture of you with your name, and the next time, after she looks at the picture she is amazingly good at replicating the look you like. That's better service than I ever got in the US. Cost is 200 includes shampoo/blowdry and half arsed head massage. She's also good at pedicures. She's not for everyone. For people who know exactly what you want, she probably will never really understand you. I agree that finding a decent haircut can be a challenge in Thailand. But it was also a challenge for me in the US.

Come on dude! Your hair cut plays a significant role in your appearance. Have a little pride in yourself.

I get accused of being "too straight" (i.e. I don't fuss over my appearance obsessively enough) by gay guys sometimes. But even I believe a decent hair cut's important!
But you! You're just a freaking robot! :hello1:

You need to kick the right side of your brain into action!

That's hilarious! :rolling:

their best stylist left and set up his own business nearby. So I followed him and now get my hair cut at Up2 Salon on 2nd floor of the Charn Issara building on Rama 4 near the corner of Surawong Rd. Smaller shop than Cuties but all the services you mention are available and at a cheaper price: haircut, styling, shampoo, colour, manicure, pedicure, foot massage, waxing etc.

Ah, thanks for that tip, Roger.

Problem solved, I just got into the first barber shop I could find next to my hotel (Silom Soi 22/1) and got a haircut for 130 Baht. This is my cheapest haircut ever, however there is room for improvement. I saw prices of 70 or 80 Baht elsewhere.

Beachy, I don't know which kind of hairdo would fit me best, so I just get a short cut (to maximise the time between two visits to a hairdresser, currently about 3 months).

Are you sure you don't want to nip out immediately and buy a wig - just so you can then go into one of those other shops and experience a 70B haircut?

Obviously you are past caring about the way your hair is cut so I am sure a bar-boy will do it for you if you give him a razor and a pair of scissors..

I have this mind's eye picture of a would be traveller rushing to get on line to find out where the cheapest haircut is to be found after flying all the way to Thailand. Still it takes all sorts!

Scottish, your wig idea is thoughtful but not thoughtful enough. For Christian it would just be an "unnecessary cost". Especially since it probably wouldn't matter to him how hideous a haircut turned out. :rolling:

I don't know which kind of hairdo would fit me best...
That's what a good hairdresser is for...

You don't know, which insurance policy, legal strategy or electrical system would fit best so you seek out good professionals right?

Try it once. Go to a high-end hairdresser and get a feel for what they offer. Same applies to hotels, food, drinks, clothes and everything else you buy. No guarantee you'll walk out feeling that it's made a worthwhile difference but it's always worth trying. Otherwise you don't know what you don't know...

The big debate here (for me) is where do you get a good hair cut for what you pay????????
Many "salons" or shops in Pattaya and BKK charge 250-300 baht and in my opinion, the cuts are average --not the best.
I live in Pattaya and I hear that there are a couple shops in South Pattaya (near Day Night hotel) where the hair cuts are above the norm and the charge is only around 80-100 baht. But it is too far for me.

When in Bangkok, I faithfully go to a "BARBERSHOP" that is along Silom, about 5 shops down from Silom Shopping Center (going toward Dusit Hotel). Near the Saledang Skytrain Station.(I think the shop would be directly across the street from Burger King near "soi DJ". The shop is upstairs across from an internet shop that is also upstairs. The steps are rather steep, but the 3 guys there are use to a gay crowd ( a couple of them are gay) and they do a super job for only 150 baht. After the haircut/style, they then get the razor out and trim around ones ear and neck which I never get at the "hair salons" in the shopping centers. :hello1:
