I have just visited Singapore for a very short budget-oriented [as far as that is possible in Singapore!] visit. I stayed at The Queen Resident 'Hotel', which is attached to a 24 hour sauna.

I had a King Room @ $S75.00 per night, very basic room with a 'just' double bed, old iron frame but surprisingly fitted with a comfortable mattress. There was an old fridge [large] a cupboard with doors almost falling off, and an excellent free wi-fi connection. Sort of air-conditioned! There is an A/c in the narrow corridor and reversed exhaust fans over each bedroom door to draw the cool air inside...it actually works!

As my sole purpose for being in Singapore [visa run from Indonesia] was to eat, drink and have fun for a couple of days, as cheaply as possible, the room was purely for the daily email accesses and sleeping, so it was adequate this time.

In fact daily runs to Raffles City for lunch [best sandwiches ever at the basement bread/sandwich shop..$10 but worth it!] and associated activities [just for a look on ground, 1st and 2nd floors, action on basement 2 and 3 floors], back to QR for a quick look to see/feel who is in the Maze/Dark Room, the off to Chinatown [5 mins walk or one stop on MRT from Outram Park to Chinatown [and mandatory stop at that amazing station facility!] for Overpriced [compared to Bali] Cantonese food in the usual filthy footpath restaurants with lousy service that are always FULL, although mostly with loud tourists drinking their large Tigers! Then to the relative peace of early Backstage, watching the arrivals [management must have had a change of heart...the miniature facility on the terrace for years had a 'forest' between the two urinals, now open space...is that an invitation to explore?

Sleep at QR is difficult as whenever you awake you are tempted to throw on a towel, go down 2 flights in the lift and re-explore what is around...it really operates 24 hours! After a brief encounter then a deep sleep seems to follow, till next time!

Are you talking about the hawker eateries on the corner of Pagoda and Sago Street? These are smack bang in the middle of that little tourist area and WAY overpriced! I dropped in there for lunch one day, didn't check prices and was shocked to be charged $16 for 8 satay sticks.

There are 6-7 hawker food centres within a 5 min walk of that one charging NORMAL prices, e.g. $4-5 for 8 satay sticks. Excellent value. I like Maxwell Food Centre as it's seems to be open 24 hrs. I can show up at 3am in the morning and there will always be a couple of stalls open to feed me. There's another acclaimed hawker stall nearby where you can get a nice little lobster/crayfish (forget what exactly) beautifully served on a plate of tasty noodles for something ridiculous like $5.

Oh yeah! Nothing nicer in Singapore then sitting back with a nice big plate of tasty satay and a frothy cold TIGER or GUINNESS... Love it!

Hi,
It was a while ago that I stayed in this Gaff, when it was at that time, reputedly the tallest hotel in the World in the early nineties. I then moved on to Conrad International, and on my last trip it was arranged through the agent in little Sunnee Plaza!!

I was approahed a number of times, when I was stood by an atrium with escalators running around with a shopping mall, I can't remember if it was downstairs in this hotel or very close by, but the Singaporean made no secret of what his proposals we

I think that's the Swissotel now.

Hi Beachy,

I think it was the Westin Stamford, that keeps ringing a bell. I could be wrong, it was early nineties. Whatever anyway, thre point of my story was that trade was freely available.

Anyway Beachy, you're right, I have just googled it and it says it changed recently! not a bad memory I have then after all. Twas a great hotel.

Yeah, there's supposed to be a top bar with an awesome view on one of the top floors (level 72, I think) of the Swissotel Stamford. I only know this as I was in Singapore for a piss up with a few mates last year and we had planned to go there... never did make it as we got too pissed elsewhere beforehand LOL.

As far as trade goes, the only place I've bumped into it in Singapore is at Play Nightclub where a really cute Vietnamese confessed he was a moneyboy after chatting me up one night... Was really surprised as that was the last place I expected to bump into a moneyboy.
