My Australian friend, back from a whirlwind tour of parts of Isaan, reports that his most pleasant experience was lunching al fresco on the banks of the Mekong at Nong Kai. Apparently there's a well-established area with guesthouses and riverside restaurants - some popular with tour parties so be warned - where an indifferent Thai meal at Bangkok prices can be eaten while gazing at the traffic on the Mekong. There's a regular crossing nearby where little boats take their cargo across from Thailand to Laos. Those who remember Yves from Telephone Bar in Soi 4 may know that he has a restaurant in Vientiane; apprently local supplies are so poor he has to cross to Udon Thani every fortnight to stock up. Although my friend stayed a night in Udon Thani he couldn't locate Boy Zone (http://www.theboyzone-udon.com/home) so is unable to report on what erotic delights may await the weary traveller to those parts.
