" Called the Aman Resort Bangkok, the development will cost one billion baht including the preservation of three heritage buildings, construction of a four-storey hotel building and a five-storey back-office building, and new accommodation for officials. "

" The luxury hotel with only 33 rooms is expected to open around the end of 2007. The average room rate will be about $800 per night. "

I'm struggling to see
(1) why it's a "heritage" building, and
(2) why it's worth preserving

I think it's the old Customs House which was part of the European quarter. It certainly looks as if it will be a very attractive Colonial type hotel. Aman hotels are very DeLuxe indeed. The Phuket one was the first and has accommodation from US$680 to 7500.

Poor Bangkok has so little architecture of interest that it's great to see an interesting old building brought back to life. It looked very derilect as you passed it on the river. There have been suggestions that it was to be converted to an hotel around for years.

Amaretto - Thanks for the update on the historic Customs House/Aman Resort.

I did want to note that the top pic in your initial post is actually an old residence named "Ban Bang Yeekhan" built circa 1910 (and was later a Muslim school). It is located on the opposite side of the river -- a bit further north in the Bang Phat area of Bangkok.

I could be mistaken but I don't believe it is part of the Aman Resort plans. I would LOVE to be wrong as I would like to see this structure restored as well. You can find some great pics and more info about this building if you google "Ban Bang Yeekhan"...
