ADSL Service

Help! Last year I obtained ADSL service through TT&T, 256 kbps (but not bad), fairly expensive. This year, I am in a new condo. The phone is from TOT, so I have ADSL service from TOT, 512 kbps and much less expensive. But the TOT 512 is much slower than the TT&T 256, and not a whole lot better than 56 kbps from dial-up connections. I have heard that CAT will install a telephone line solely devoted to data for ADSL. Does anyone know about this? Does anyone know whether TOT or CAT has a good or bad reputation when it comes to ADSL?

These figures are only half the story. What are the respective contention rates?

What are "contention rates"? I have a feeling the answer is the number of people sharing the same server (or something similar), right? I suspect that TOT is jamming too many customers onto the same server.... I do recall that when I signed up with TT&T last year, their rate schedule was partially based on how many people were sharing the server.... Anyone have any experience with wireless Internet access in Thailand? I mean wireless access from your own home, not from hot spots here and there...

Hutch used to have a representative who participated actively in the Pattaya City Expats Club, but he hasn't been there for probably two years now. He promoted Hutch's ADSL service. I think the biggest barrier was a reported quotation of about 18,000 baht to install the equipment for sending to and receiving from the satellite. Hutch's office on South Pattaya Road right next to Kasikorn Bank would have information. I'd be interested, but an 18,000 baht fee for a satellite receiver is still a little "off-putting".

If anyone gets any direct information on Hutch, or any other provider of satellite service (wireless), for Pattaya, I'd sure be interested.

I use TT&T, costs 599 baht per month for 256 KBS. Free modem, free month and free tel card for 1 year contract (though the freebie packages chage almost weekly). There was an installation charge - around 1,500 baht including a new telephone account (though the physical line was there already).

Service acceptable - delivers about 190 kbs most of the time, though there were some problems at first.

Many different stories street by street i am sure. Speed all relates to how many on your good or bad shared line in asdl up to 50 at a time and how many using it at the time. Speed offered in ads. is rarely delivered it seems across pattaya. I pay 1000 baht a month for TT&T but later packages are cheaper service ok to moderate. Many areas in town still cannot have lines and long waiting on some, blame CAT monopoly and low investment in systems Dedicated lines are far too expensive for now 8-10000 baht a month a friend was quoted.

FWIW, I subscribe in Pattaya to TT&T's Maxnet 512K for B790/month. They have a chart of different plans and the sales person told me the contention rates.

Maxnet@Home: with 40 people sharing (the contention rate)
512K/256K (which I have) is B790

Maxnet@Life: contention rate = 10 people sharing
256/128K = B1450
512/256K = B2350
1M/512k = B4000

Maxnet@SME: contention rate = 5 people sharing
256/128K = B3100
512K/256K = B5400
1M/512K = B11,000

Maxnet@Biz: contention rate = 2 people sharing
256/256K = B8000
512/512K = B13000
1M/512K = B21000

Note that Maxnet@Biz at the two lower speeds is SDSL = same speed up/down.

The brochure also shows a 256/128k speed for the @Home flavor for B590/month, but it was not available when I signed up. I don't know if that was temporary, or a discontinued product?

I was leery of signing up for the plan I have, with 40 parties sharing, but after three months now, I'm very satisfied with the performance

I also have an apartment in Japan with 12M service, which is currently the slowest service offered by many ISPs there, and of course I'm MUCH more satisfied with it.

I am not very sure of these facts. I understand that Communication Authority Thailand is a Government monopoly which controls the networks and International access. As far as I know they don't provide any services direct to customers. They used bill me for International calls separately from my telephone supplier but now the are all incorporated in one bill.

Telephone Organization of Thailand is the land line Government Monopoly which provides telephone lines and services to consumers.

TT&T is a sop to privatization intended to provide a mini-competition to TOT. TOT are required to provide them with lines and in some areas both are available. I think there is virtually no difference in costs or service but there is sometimes a difference in their ability to provide a new line.

I hope that someone can improve on this description or point us to some site where this is all explained in English - I had no success with a quick google.

I forgot to mention that the Maxnet@Home plan prohibits the use of VOIP (Internet phone) or file sharing services.

I'm not sure, but I don't think there is any restriction on the other Maxnet plans.

Are these prices of 790 Per month including line rental, or is this an additional cost on top of the 790?

If so can someone advise of the total cost of having internet in your home per month?

The Maxnet rates do not include the phone line. I pay B107/month to the phone company for that.

So, not including any voice calls you might make (or any faxes you might send), the total monthly cost is:

B790 MaxNet 512k
B107 telephone bill
B897 total

Actually I consider a telephone line more or less a necessity, so I personally view my monthly internet cost as just the B790.

I can't find my receipts, but there is some nominal setup fee and I got a free USB ADSL modem for sigining a long-term contract.

This costs 700 a month plus the 100 or so for just the line every month. Telephone calls of course will add to this.
Service has been very off and on for last 6 months. Was as low a 30 kps
and as fast (for one day only) 380 kps.
One thing TOT will guarantee is that you will get grey hair faster rather than later with adsl. Yours truely, Little old white haired man.
