I just got an Iphone for my holiday in Thailand and I am now looking for helpful apps to put on it before I arrive. Do any of you have Iphone app suggestions? Maybe there is a program you use on your phone that you feel that you could not live without? Or maybe it just makes your travels so much easier?

I am LOVING this Iphone! I found that I can go to Google Contacts, load in the info and it is pushed to my Iphone. Instead of using a Thai friends last name I put in their city and then on my eye phone it organizes them for me. So I can view all my Bangkok friends at a glance. The same goes for my Pattaya friends.

I can then open their contact info I can see their pic if I attached one (I am using their online pics) that I loaded onto my gmail contact list. Or I can just tap their web link I placed and view their online profile. Or I can go to notes and look at the cut and paste of a convo I have had with them!

This has to be the best thing I have come to use!

I also love the "FREE" Travelmate program I just added to it. I sent them my travel itinerary and it was loaded on my phone in easy to read format with gates and times. I also added my hotel info and dates on it so I can see all my holiday reservations and dates at a glance! AWESOME! http://www.worldmate.com/iphone/

While looking for info on APPS for Thailand I found a link that helped me unlock my Iphone and now I also turned my Iphone into a Wifi Hotspot! So once I am in Thailand I can use my Iphone to give my laptop WiFi connection while in the car, on the beach, on the bus or at the airport! Here is the link to unlock your Iphone http://www.redmondpie.com/unlock-ios-4. ... -to-guide/ (http://www.redmondpie.com/unlock-ios-4.0.2-with-ultrasn0w-how-to-guide/)

I also Downloaded a money converter app that is free and also AWESOME! http://www.xe.com/iphone/

This thing is AWESOME!

That's worthy of a new thread on the updated Resource Forum 2011, bucknaway. Maybe something along the lines of "Cell phone tips and applications".

It could answer the "will my phone work" and "what about SIM card" questions, too - assuming it could be kept clean of the usual derailing nonsense.

Thanks for the links!

Grindr seems to be the one you are looking for. A really good app for finding people in your location.

WiFi seems to be everywhere in Pattaya. I tried my Grindr at Montys yesterday and got some stunning guys on line.

Was talking to a BKK guy up for the weekend and he said he has a lot of success with grindr in BKK.

I only have the basic grindr and have not upgraded . I was told it is well worth upgrading.

Have to consider that.

I used Grindr while in Thailand and most of the messages received were from non-thai guys. I refuse to have sex with fellow Americans while I am in Thailand... Well I should not say "Refuse" because it could happen at some point, but I can't imagine it.

Seems I met more guys when DJ station let out. It worked so well that I didn't even bother to go inside DJ station.. I would just show up near closing time, buy a bowl of soup and make myself open to meet a stranger and transform him into a friend :)

I do remember doing a lot of SMS's with guys I first started chatting with online.

Another Free App is called "BangkokBTS". Its just a map of the Skytrain and Subway, but can come in handy. There are several Thai/English translation/dictionary apps. Some are free, others cost a dollar or two.

I don't know any converters that work on the iPhone, but ArcSoft Media Converter 7 for PC or MAC will pretty much convert any video format to any other format. Works great...

@bucknaway did you try the spartacus gay guide app? I have not tried it for Thailand yet but for Europe and USA it is fine

I looked at the spartacus iphone app.

It is quite pricy. About тВм12 for the whole of the World (you can get just europe, or the world outside europe, for about тВм6).

You can see the South Africa Guide as a free example. I tried having a look at it, and to be honest i found the whole thing very slow and awkward to navigate. An app like that works best if you can use the location capability of your phone, to see exactly where the next bar is on a google map, or whatever.

But if you are travelling to Thailand from Europe for a holiday, most people would be trying to cut down on roaming charges by not using data. That means that you would be using it a bit like a paper guidebook, and the if that is the case, you would be better off just getting the paperback and photocopying the relevent pages.

jinks already hinted at it, but if that Spartacus (once, many moons ago about the only guideBOOK on gay places strewn around this globe) is like the last book, its more like a lesson in history: for BKK it even showed places that were completely torn down like 7-9 years ago (no-I do not keep notes on when exactly). As 99% of you in fact only limit to the BKK-Silom-ghetto, I see no need at all for fancy hi-tech guides to places further on in BKK anyway. Waste of cyberspace to have old stuff moved to some fancy new app or whatever.
That BKK-transit app is also about worthless-shows buslines abolished also 7-9 years ago-it is apparently based on some stolen mapping from a Japanese. Good luck with waiting for buses that exist no more-who knows you may meet at that stop........

I have to say, in favour of the Spartacus paperback guide, it was pretty accurate when i used it in my first visit. At least with a book, you can tell from the publication date how out of date it is - if you are using one that was published two years ago you know to be on your guard against out of date information.

With the internet guides, you dont know how recent the information is. I remember that at one stage the dreadedned was years out of date with some of its info, despite having some much more up to date information in its homepage.

Nowadays I would know, when looking at online guides, which ones are pretty up to date for Thailand (such as the Nicky's Guides,or Bontong in Chiang Mai) and to use them.

But if it was your first time to Thailand, you would probably end up using the dreadedned site as it is (or was ) the only one referenced in Lonely Planet.

One thing I always liked about the Spartacus Guide was that it tried to be coomprehensive - it had the lone bar in Udon thani or Khon Kaen included. I remember one time looking at the Thailand page of an international online gay guide - it was broken down into "Bangkok-Pattaya-Phuket-Chiang Mai". No other town existed as far as it was concerned. You would have to go running back to the ole dead-tree Spartacus to find out if there was a gay bar in Hua Hin for example.

The Utopia Asia guide seems to be the only online gay guide that tries to include more than the biggest cities.

February 17th, 2012, 18:57
Frankly, what I do now is buy the Spartacus paper version on Ebay once it's a year out of date!

I always found it was at its most useful as a "starting point" where you could find someplace and start up a conversation with locals to find out what was happening right now, rather than as a 100% reliable list of places to visit.

I've found http://www.gayscout.com/ quite useful to supplement Utopia with. It does include some smaller cities and can be quite useful as all its listings are pinned on a map!

Sometimes finding gay bars and amenities in foreign cities can be a nightmare! You know you're in for a journey when Utopia and Gayscout show two different locations for the same bar!
