View Full Version : Buy the Board from Spike

July 11th, 2010, 18:48
Would a solution to the Ban the Troll, be to buy the board from the present owner?

It has a good layout. Easy to navigate. Some posters have been with it a long time. It has been around a long time.

Like many, I hardly ever read it any more nor hardly ever post.

How much would a Board like this cost? The the new owner group could certainly appoint all the moderators they choose

If the present owner was of a mind to sell...it would be strongly recommended that he clean it up first, as in it's current state it has lost its glimmer. Tough to sell a nest of trolls to anyone...get my drift?

You'd be forking out $10k to shift from one headache to another headache.

Sure, you MIGHT be able to get rid of the 'trolls', with enough effort... but then you have the headache of managing a fiddly site like this.

July 11th, 2010, 20:29
Have you boarded over your letterbox because you might get junk mail?

Personally, I read almost all the junk mail that arrives - just in case there might be something interesting and if there isn't I just throw it in the bin. I don't resent it arriving or the time spent going through it.

I don't see why you can't take the same approach to the content of SGT.

But if you're determined to change things then why not just start your OWN board?

It's bound to be cheaper than buying an established one and I can't imagine it would be be rocket-science to set up.

Then you can have strict membership and editorial policies designed to ensure that all the like-minded members can talk amongst themselves about such worthy subjects as who has died this week, how the Baht has gained 3 satangs against the Dollar, or what the weather was like in Chiang Mai last Tuesday.

Sounds fantastic.

:rolling: :rolling: :rolling:

PS This isn't "trolling" it's a positive suggestion.

Maybe a simple webpage is easy enough, but a message board of this quality does take someone with a whole bunch of training.

As to purchasing the board,, I have read 6 pages of posts criticizing the moderation of this board. This is not the first time I saw this on this board. So what would be another solution, is what I was putting forward for thought.

And of course there are some happy with the moderation. But count the posts in the thread about Trolls. A much greater number felt that moderation of people posting, said that changes were needed.

Well, it isn't rocket science, that's true. You don't need to program (i.e write code) but you need to put everything in the right place and customize the look. Also, it takes a while to build traffic and search-engine ranking. I'd be happy to entertain any reasonable offers, made privately. I am really completely over being the nanny and policeman and I've grown further and further away from much interest in the subject matter over the years. Thailand? Been there, done that.

I'd be happy to stay on as a tech adviser during any transition, though.

LMTU is always telling everyone how exceedingly wealthy he is from his 'investments' Perhaps he could make you an offer and have his very own forum. The moderating would be a sight to behold!

Buy it?! I gave it to Spike, not sold it. I guess I'd expect the same going the other way.
But it's a moot point anyway: Not interested.

Somebody else should do it: no matter what anyone says, and strictly 'by the numbers' (i.e. 'Views'; 'Comments'; 'Posts'; 'Topics') Sawatdee is still far ahead of any of the other gay Thailand Boards ... by quite a margin.

I'm not saying I don't give a damn about this online community, just that I'm not interested enough in the subject matter to pour through page after page about it every day. That's what I'd have to do to determine the context of posts to determine who is a "troll".

Buy it?! I gave it to Spike, not sold it.
[X] Finally, an explanation for the extremely peculiar behaviour of a poster. Or two:

According to Lowen (1985), narcissism refers to a syndrome characterized by exaggerated investment in one's own image versus one's true self and in how one appears versus how one actually feels. Dispositions often mentioned in definitions of narcissism as being characteristic of narcissism include dispositions to behave in seductive and manipulative ways, to strive for power, and to sacrifice personal integrity for ego needs. Adults diagnosed as suffering from the narcissism syndrome often complain that their lives are empty or meaningless, and they often show insensitivity to the needs of others. Their behavior patterns suggest that notoriety and attention are more important to them than their own dignity.

According to Emmons (1987), narcissism is characterized by being self-absorbed, self-centered, or selfish, even to the extent that it "may lessen individuals' willingness to pursue common social objectives...[and] increase potential for social conflict...on a group level" such as occurs with "excessive ethnocentrism" (p. 11). As part of the definition of narcissism in adults, Emmons refers to the tendency to "accept responsibility for successful outcomes and deny blame for failed outcomes" (p. 11). According to some specialists, narcissism includes a preoccupation with fantasies about unlimited success, power, and beauty, plus a grandiose sense of self-importance. Raskin, Novacek, and Hogan (1991) interpret their experimental findings to mean that narcissistic behaviors are defenses against, or defensive expression of, threatening emotions such as anger, anxiety, and fear. Anger, hostility, and rage seem central to the emotional life of the narcissist; consequently, narcissistic behaviors may allow the expression of these emotions in a way that protects a sense of positive self-regard. (p. 917)

Narcissists are also sometimes described as exhibitionistic, requiring constant attention and admiration, often believing that they are entitled to special favors without the need to reciprocate. They tend to exploit others, to be seekers of sensations, experiences, and thrills, and to be highly susceptible to boredom. Many of these characteristics of narcissism seem to apply to our culture in general and to many of our youth in particular.

Wink (1991) suggests that narcissism takes at least two major forms. The classical form is indicated by excessive need for admiration, frequent exhibitionism, conceit, and a tendency toward open expression of grandiosityтАФcommonly referred to as "being a bit too full of oneself." Wink calls the second form "covert narcissism," in which individuals "appear to be hypersensitive, anxious, timid, and insecure; but on close contact surprise others with their grandiose fantasies" (p. 591). They tend to be exploitative and to over-interpret others' behavior as caused by or directed to themselves rather than to others.

In sum, healthy self-esteem refers to realistic and accurate positive appraisals of the self on significant criteria across a variety of interpersonal situations. It also includes the ability to cope with the inevitability of some negative feedback. By contrast, unhealthy self-esteem, as in narcissism, refers to insensitivity to others, with excessive preoccupation with the self and one's own image and appearance in the eyes of others.
Continue to Appropriate Practices.

Give me $1,000 and I could probably get a board like this setup with plenty of change to spare. (Not saying I would want to... )

You wouldn't bother doing it YOURSELF unless you're some retired or semi-retired person with plenty of time on their hands. Pay some low techie to do it and find someone else (uni student?) to manage it - do updates, fixes, banner ad changes, manage moderators, etc.

But as Spike says... setting up a board is nothing. There are plenty of nice-looking boards sitting around, which are completely empty. It's getting the search engine rankings up... populating it with content... attracting the right audience... etc. that's the challenging bit that makes the difference between profitable/unprofitable.

Why take Beachlover seriously? In 2 years he's has made almost 2500 meanIngless posts..............That doesn't speak for itself?

And in one month you've made 110 posts, which puts you at the exact same rate as BeachLover.

Only difference being, BeachLover doesn't register a new account every 2 - 3 months.

EDIT: Actually, BL registered 2.5 years ago, putting your posting rate higher than his.

Spike, I appreciate the fact that you were honest about your position on this. As they say in LOS...up to you. But, on the other hand, I think you are forgetting something that is very important:

A forum (any forum) is nothing more than the members who provide the substance, and it's that substance which inevitably determines the success or failure of a forum. I think it's fair to say that SGT is still the most popular gay Thailand forum - and my friend it's not the moderators that have made this happen - it's the members. You were fortunate enough to have inherited the substance which was cultivated well before the launch of SGT by a person who knew the importance of staying in touch with its members. By isolating yourself from the inner workings of the forum the way you have, you, in fact, have contributed to the state of decay it is in now. Furthermore, we have been discussing this topic for over a week now - during a time when your moderation was needed the most, and now, after the week has passed and the dialogue between members is coming completely unglued (if there was any glue to begin with), you decide to show up and tell us you're just bored.

Hopefully you will be thoughtful enough to find a suitable replacement, if for no other reason than to show your gratitude and respect for the members who kept this forum as popular as it is.

I have a plane to catch in an hour. I can only pray that the pilot isn't as bored with his responsibilities as you are.

I agree completely, Dodger - and frankly I feel a little taken advantage of, having just responded to an appeal for funding - making the contribution in good faith. Why ask for payment for services you don't "feel like" providing or appointing a trusted couple of others to handle for you?

At this point I'm certainly not inclined to do it again. What a sad state of affairs.

Personally and Likely, none of you care a great deal what I think, nor do I care, however, I like others have been on this forum for years and the one before that. I would hate to see it go down in flames. ItтАЩs been a point of interest for me for years and although I rarely post any more I do read what I think has not already been gone over fifty times in the past ten years.

If trolls are the problem then put them and me on ignore and stick to not opening their posts even when they seem to talk about you. The posters which truly are the substance of the forum can just ignore someone off the board, in as much as they are just here for the attention, in which they do not get or find otherwise. So, In my opinion it is not Spike nor Smiles that made this what it is but, the people who have posted and put up with all sorts of shit for years from a long line of trolls. That have come and gone. Like I say, the easy way is to just ignore them and they will find another nesting place for their useless thoughts on life and Thailand.
I for one have lost some interest in Thailand but mostly with the government not the boys or, the people who run the bars and guesthouses that I go to when I am there. I plan to go this year and again when I do, my interest will perk up and catch up on all the facts that make this board head and shoulders above some of the others. I personally think Ting and Tong would get the best of this board if it failed to go on.

I must relent not to say that this board was started while GP was still up and running, Smiles was looking for a free place to post without strict monitoring and now it seems to have gone full circle to want to be over governed like big government is bad for a country so, it is here as well. ItтАЩs been the freedom that Smiles sought in the beginning and itтАЩs not the time to go back to what he was running away from. True, Hedda and other found their own little niche but, began in the revolt with Smiles to begin this one. Many of you are unaware of how all this began. It was in search of freedom to post that it began, if you take that away, then you just as well be in Ting and Tong and leave this one where it is.

True if Spike has lost his interest then he should give away what he inherited as much as Smiles inherited much of it from PG. No one wants to do all that reading without a salary and if he is making enough to live off the forum then he should take care of it, if not then appoint good moderators who will.

July 13th, 2010, 14:24
"...count the posts in the thread about Trolls. A much greater number ....said that changes were needed.

No No No you can't do that for goodness sake!

Certain people have responded in a certain way to a certain thread that's all. You cannot then extrapolate that to say that the vast majority of all members are unhappy.

That's as ridiculous as me saying that all the members who haven't posted must be happy or they would be posting to this thread in protest.

Personally, I don't see a problem. It's like the TV - if you don't like certain programmes you turn those programmes off i.e. ignore.

Scottish-guy;

For a long time I agreed with this position, as I have never been inclined to put anyone on an ignor list - nor am I inclined now. Honestly, those who are being categorized (or categorizing themselves) as trolls here have never bothered me personally, and for some strange reason they have always left me alone.

The reason I posted "Ban the Trolls" was out of concern for the majority (>90%) of our Board members who do not actively participate in our discussions because of their fear of being insulted and/or ridiculed by the few members with lob-sided personalities we have running around here. Call them trolls - call them what you want, but they seem bent on doing nothing more than causing destruction...venting their anger, frustration, resentments, and insecurities about life in general - on the only people who will listen to them.

For the past few months these morans have been on a feeding frenzy which has resulted in the exodus of many long-time members and valuable contributors - and now even the discussion about the demise of the Board in total. At some point something has to be done.

Irronically, almost every single personal attack (what most refer to as a troll attack) is the result of a grudge and personal vandetta that one member holds against another. Maybe the solution would be for the moderator(s) to monitor this type of behavior and contact the attacker via PM with a warning statement in a proactive manner - versus just letting the person (troll if you wish) run wild. If the attacker disregardss the warning message and continues attacking - he gets banned....simple as that. Not evan a troll could debate that logic.

There is no point in trying to reason or point out the "troublemakers" here, the mods couldn't give a flying fcuk about the content or behaviour of anyone posting. As someone already pointed out it is purely a question of numbers/visitors to this site....nothing else matters!!!

By isolating yourself from the inner workings of the forum the way you have, you, in fact, have contributed to the state of decay it is in now.

He's become a passive owner. To him, the board is purely here to provide a little income for him... hopefully a "secondary" income.

you decide to show up and tell us you're just bored.

I think he's been to Thailand once (or however many times several years ago) but can't afford to go back so isn't interested anymore.

Hopefully you will be thoughtful enough to find a suitable replacement

True if Spike has lost his interest then he should give away what he inherited as much as Smiles inherited much of it from PG.

I think he would be selling it. Not giving it away. Which is fair enough as he has put a fair bit of work into improving and building it over the years.

Yeah, but here's the thing. Why do you guys feel inclined to make donations at all anymore or for the last few years?

It's no longer a "community" thing. It's a commercial operation. This website earns many more times what it costs in cash to run it.

If you make a donation at all, it should be because the members' benefits make it worthwhile - having ads removed and all. If the owner can't offer a good enough value proposition to justify the fee for "paid membership" then don't bother. And don't do it on charitable grounds because it's not a charity. He makes an income off this.

And on that note, Bao Bao and others have a point. If you're going to elicit donations, the responsible thing to do is to look like you're making a decent effort at running the site. Personally, I don't see anything massively wrong with the site, but it's not going to look that way to most people if you decide to ignore almost everything, refuse to reply to any and all complaints then come on and tell everyone you're bored and can't be bothered is it?

When Gayboythailand.com lost his Google Adword revenue and expressed he may stop the blog, many readers offered to donate if he made possible with PayPal. He refused because he said it would obligate him to keep up the posts and he wasn't sure he was motivated to continue blogging. Sure enough, a few months later he shut down the blog, without ever eliciting a single donation, despite being in a tight financial situation and having many many, avid readers willing to donate.

That's integrity.

July 15th, 2010, 00:38
Definately true. Apparently had 30 days and duly turned up to pay the bill 30 days later. Is this a person, who believes he is right, would go along with, or challenge it. Of course not, he was siht scared because he was frightened of being arrested. Now he says he is a friend of the person who chased him for the money.. That I do not believe and apparently there were witnesses to the incident.
Will he reply? Of course not. He ignores all the the unsavoury bits in any post he contributes to in all the handles he has!

When someone is a liar on this then it means that I have no doubt as to who is right and the mere fact that Thailand has a different interpretation of that, is something we all live with when in Thailand. So paying up for the sake of it is the easy way out in your eyes.

Fair enough. What about getting a lawyer if you feel you have been wronged? He had 30 days after the event to challenge it and did nothing!! The fact is he owed the money, full stop.

He now says that this person is his friend! Has he ever challenged that person to get back his supposed wrongful charges. NO!! So what does that tell you?

quote="scottish-guy"]Not really interested in getting involved in this spat but all I would say is that if the Thai police demanded I pay money to somebody or be arrested then the chances are I would pay it - even if I was in the right. Kinda think that would be the smart thing to do.

Anyway, I'll let you guys get on it with it.

Just auction the thing on flippa.com then. You won't get the five figures you were asking for at one time, but it shouldn't be a problem to sell. Then you won't have the hassle of this burdensome board anymore.

Definately true.

Of course. LMTU* doesn't want to touch this thread with a 20 foot poll now... now the black and white facs have come out.
