If you got a double entry tourist VISA, exactly what you're thinking is true. Come in for 60 days, extend by 30 at the local immigration office.
After that, do a quick VISA run to Lao or Cambodia (no worries, it can be done at land borders), then you'll get stamped in for another 60 days, which you can extend by 30 at local immigration office again. Giving you a total of 6 months with one VISA run, and two visits to immigration. :-)
However, not exactly free. Each 30 day extension will cost you 1900 baht.
