AirAsia offers free Thai tickets as fare war takes off

Discount airline AirAsia has launched special fares to lift Thailand's tourism industry in the wake of the bloody political clashes in Bangkok that prompted the Australian government to warn travellers to avoid the capital.

AirAsia is offering a limited number of free flights from Bali to Bangkok, and $10 fares from Kuala Lumpur to the Thai capital to entice travellers.

This latest move comes as new market research shows Australia's domestic tourism is on the slide.

The AirAsia offer is part of a sale of 10,000 seats between Bangkok and Asian cities in Malaysia, Burma, Cambodia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Taiwan and Indonesia, with fares costing up to $38 one-way.

As a regional carrier, AirAsia's chief executive Tony Fernandes said he felt "duty-bound" to help Thailand "bounce back".

Australians increasingly want to holiday overseas and as a result most domestic destinations have lost appeal for Australians," said Jane Ianniello, Roy Morgan Research's international director for tourism, travel and leisure sectors.

I wish the Malaysian Government would allow AirAsia to fly the Sydney-KL route. There still isn't a low-cost way to get to Asia from Sydney to a major city in SEA without a hop.

I have a friend in Sydney who today booked Jetstar SYD/MEL/BKK 3 june and return 10 june for $970.10 incl taxes. He had an option of paying an extra $70 for a flight at 10AM ex Syd but took the 9.10AM. As a successful businessman I know this would not be of interest to you, but for those reading this thread it is the cheapest almost direct flight from Aust. Even cheaper from Melbourne.

Yeah but that's my point. He has to hop to Melbourne first... adds 4-6 hours (both ways) to the trip. He may as well pay $1,200 and fly direct.

But if he was happy to do SYD-MeL-BKK, perhaps Sydney-Phuket (Jetstar) then Phuket-BKK might also work for him. That could be done for as little as $900 (depending on timing) and I think (I haven't checked) the flying hours would be less because Phuket is sort of on the way to BKK where as with Melbourne you need to fly South then fly North again.

He was meeting family in Melbourne who were flying that flight. As a business man he prefers full service Qantas flights

He was meeting family in Melbourne who were flying that flight.

So he had a reason to stop by Melbourne.

I thought you said he booked with Jetstar?

He is meeting family and flying with them to Thailand, otherwise as a businessman he would no be seen dead on jetstar.
