I am looking for somewhere else to go where I can have lots of "fun", apart from Thailand, but nearby. Which country has the best gay scene apart from Thailand? Do they have gay bars/host clubs in Laos or Cambodia? I'd be interested in anyone's personal experiences of these places.

Singapore actually has a pretty cool gay scene. Two main gay clubs. But they only really get going on Fri/Sat nights.

Kuala Lumpur has a lot of gay clubs and all of them get pretty packed Fri/Sat nights. I think some of them are busy on weeknights as well.

Closest thing is the Philippines...but it is a real shithole.

May 27th, 2010, 23:47
Yeah I'm trying to find Plan B myself.. even though I shouldn't be in BKK till the very end of July...

Singapore was a thought, then again 10 days in Singapore living the life would cost me like a month in Thailand...and what am I gonna do when I get bored of Singapore? Go to Sentosa maybe? Doubt the gay life there is very intense.. or maybe do Singapore plus Bali not that it has a huge gay scene either...

Then I thought Malaysia, I was there for Christmas and KL has to be the ugliest place I've ever seen in my life.. that plus the risk of Police showing up while the masseur has his cock down your throat doesn't really seem enticing..

So I was considering Philippines myself.. there's gay scene, there's massages, there's gorgeous beaches... so I may use that as plan B.

Yes, but then again it is full of Filipinos...possibly the most over-dramatic, emotional, and otherwise useless race in all of Asia.

Don't have first hand experience other than having had Filipino maids for about 20 years..

I do think defining a people "useless race" is a bit on the verge of Nazism anyway.

Oh dude... I think end of July is far enough down the track that things will have calmed down. You only have to worry about things flaring up again... but then that could happen anytime.

Singapore is not the place to spend 10 days... unless you're on business or have other things to do there. Anything up to a week max.

How about Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong...

LOL... I've noticed some Filipino them are a bit socially awkward in this manner that only Filipinos have. Strange.

Oh yeah I did mention in another post that 2 months is plenty time but I'm not 100% sure of the structural damages there have been in BKK...
and the plan B is more for "what if it happens again"..

I wouldn't mind exploring Cambodia or Vietnam as I've never been before I will have to find info on the extra curricular activities :tongue3:

Vietnam and Cambodia are my choices. HCMC in particular is very fun and great beaches.
I always enjoyCambodia. I wish that Shionekville (spelling?) would develop so Cambodia would
have a great beach resort. Otherwise, Siem Reap is fun for 3-4 days.

Yeah, I agree... Cambodia is developing quickly. Give it time.

my plan B needs to be about 1 country only and as little travelling as possible.. otherwise i'll spend most of my holiday on airplanes buses and taxis..

I'm going to Bahrain 4 days, then have 12 days for either Thailand or Plan B (my flight goes to BKK anyway) and it has to be within easy reach to Kuala Lumpur because I need to catch a flight to Sri Lanka where I'll spend another 10 days..I had to get a flight from KL because BKK-Colombo had insane prices with Air Asia I pay very little.. so I either go from BKK to KL or some other destination so i can't really split the 12 days into 2 different countries or else I will have no more room for visa stamps :hello2:

Singapore is fine for a couple of days for those who are under 40 and in good shape, but for grandpa diaper and his trusty friend, saggy porker - both of whom have to pay to get any - it would be a bad mistake. The reality is there isn't anywhere in Asia like Thailand. The Singaporean Chinese don't need the money, (they probably earn more than most posters here do) and quite frankly almost everywhere else they have more taste. And a good thing too.

Who has actually been to all these gay clubs in KL? I visited Blue Boy, which was a dark dingy hole. All of the others listed on various websites did not seem to be gay. You can find people cruising, but it's hard work.

Phnom Penh is vastly superior. There's a choice of properly gay bars, where you can easily find a date & take him back to an openly gay guesthouse. Siem Reap & Vientiane also beat KL easily for gay life.

Out of the 6 Asian capitals I have visited so far, KL clearly ranks last for gay bars & gay night life.

It's ugly, the weather is always crap either raining or grey sky and to be honest the people are as fun as a needle in the eye :rolling:

There is already one "gay exclusive" hotel in Cambodia: MEN's Resort & Spa (http://www.mens-resort.com).. So why not a gay club one day.

Before it will come, MEN's is the place to meet some local guys and other tourists who are joining the Sauna/Spa in the evening.

You should have a look to the website: www.mens-resort.com (http://www.mens-resort.com), it is absolutly the place to go for gay travellers.

Excellent thread. Good timing for me, as on my next visit to Thailand at start of next month we(Thai guy and I)are considering a visit to Cambodia. Have checked out some gay forums and travel forums, and my first idea simply to drive to the Cambodian border (as I drive around Thailand quite comfortably), and then overland to Siem Reap by taxi/bus I have re-thought, as I cant really be arsed with all the cross-border hassle, time wasting, rip-offs etc...that comes up in ALL the reviews/postings about overland travel to Siam Reap from all the Thailand cross border places.

So by air? Checked out Bangkok Air direct to Siem Reap, very very expensive for 45 min flight(in my opinion), so have decided to fly Bkk to Phnom Phen with a couple of nights there and then taxi to Siem Reap, by all accounts it should be about $40-$50 one way, and the 4-5 hours drive will let us see the country/countryside into the bargain, as well as stopping where we fancy. 2-3 nights Siem Reap, taxi back to PP and fly back to Bkk.

The cost of return flights with AirAsia to PP plus return costs of taxi PP to Siem Reap is still cheaper than direct with Bkk Air for the two of us and including being able to enjoy the landscape whilst driving to Siem Reap. Well thats the plan.

Any comments on the plan? suggestions/ideas to improve/change the itinery. We are planning to stay at a gay guesthouse/hotel Phnom Phen and Banana? Resort in Siem Reap. About five nights short break, but time isn't really any great problem for us.

The ticket is indeed overpriced for the flight from Bkk to Siem Reap, then your plan to go through Phnom Penh and then by taxi is a good idea.

About gay hotels, as said previously, there is only one gay hotel in Cambodia : MEN's Resort in Siem Reap (http://www.mens-resort.com),
and besides that, dozens of "gay friendly" hotels, which in fact are everybody-friendly. Cambodia is a "gay-friendly" country.
In Phnom Penh the most gay within the gay friendly hotels is probably Manor House (http://www.manorhousecambodia.com)

have a nice trip in Cambodia !

Don't bother driving to Cambodia... just fly.

You can fly direct between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh a well but looks like it's relatively costly USD$100 for a 40-50 min flight. Other options are to boat (4 to 8 hours) or bus.

AirAsia does PP to BKK route at competitive rates (don't know why people are still moaning about Bangkok Air being expensive). You may wish to fly to Siem Reap as well, via Singapore or KL. It mystifies me why there are no direct Siem Reap flights from Bangkok.

Ah yes, I see. It's something like 10,000+ baht return. Insane.

I've flown BKK airways. They say they are a "boutique airline" but there's nothing very special about them. They are ok. Spacious seats and ok food though.

Beachlover
June 21st, 2010, 15:34
Because Bangkok Air has been given exclusivity on the BKK to Siem Reap route in exchange for their heavy investment in the airport infrastructure there.

I wonder if the authorities decided that out of the biggest regional inbound cities, Bangkok had the least to offer (in terms of tourist numbers/wealth) over KL and Singapore, hence being happy to sacrifice this route... giving it to one provider, keeping prices high and having less travelers than normal.

Yes, typically flagging posts does result in the post disappearing. I've flagged dozens of such posts in the past.

And, only the first member to flag a post gets the honor. If you click on the ! link, but somebody else has already done so, a pop-up message advises you that the post has already been flagged.

I live in the Philippines and have seen no sign of all the junk that someone, who must have had a bad experienced and or an agenda to keep people going to Thailand.and may be the reason he is saying such things about them. I have seen the more gay Farang there lately especially in the past year than I have ever seen before. I have never been able to get as many free guys in my life and they seem to me, to be the horniest people in the world.

They like many every where in the world are looking for a long term relationship and are disappointed if it doesn't work out. But, in general after three years there now,my assessment of the above poster is inaccurate and as far as a shit hole, I live in a great very securer condo and have never had a problem with any one although, occasionally some small things do, seem to disappear, like my Porn DVD's hahaha , not surprising, since you cant find any good stuff there. Anyway, I think the poster above is working on an agenda, since its cheaper here to vacation and the dollar is still around 45 to 46. So, its a cheap vacation place and can be as expensive or inexpensive as you like. With so many Islands you can find most anything you like. Cebu and Manila have a active and cheap gay scene. Plalawan also has a mixed gay scene.

The statements above border on being racist and I would assume was intended to be taken that way!

Yeah, I don't know why, but their accent really irritates me too.

Their natural language has its accent on the second syllable and as a result that carries into their English as well, those who have worked with Americans Brits an so forth do not have that particular problem. Also there are so many call centers outsourced there there is a large majority that have over come the accent problem.

HI all,

I'm new to the forum and I'm from the Philippines. :happy7:
I see some posts here that attacks the Filipino folks but that is fine. I too already got my share of having bad experiences with other nationalities so I might understand where he is coming from. There are times that I also do not like what my country represents but oh what the heck. All countries have its bad and good sides anyway, but I'd love to explore more about the good despite the bad. Anywayz, if you love beaches, you may want to explore most of the islands in the Philippines. Gay night life though is much active in BKK compared to the Philippines (or at least from where I'm from, Angeles City). The internet is the primary tool here if you're looking for hookups. I'd give a website but I'm not sure if that is allowed. Hope this helps a little bit ^_^
