Increasing reports on Twitter indicate that major confrontation has begun between troops and Red Shirts. One of the leaders of the Red Shirts Lt Gen Khattiya Sawasdipol has been shot and some reports are saying he has died in hospital.

A rogue soldier and de facto military chief of Thailand's red shirt protest movement was shot and wounded near Bangkok's business area on Thursday night, his close aide told Reuters.

Khattiya Sawasdipol, a suspended army specialist in charge of security at an encampment occupied by thousands of anti-government demonstrators, was admitted to an intensive care ward after being shot, said the aide, who picked up Khattiya's cellphone.

Khattiya, better known as "Seh Daeng" (Commander Red) enjoys a cult following and has been dubbed a "terrorist" by Thailand's government, which accuses him of involvement in dozens of grenade attacks that have injured more than 100 people. (Reporting by Ambika Ahuja;

According to the New York Times Seh Daeng was shot during an interview with a NYTime or IHT reporter and near the Silom/Rama 4 intersection.

BANGKOK тАФ A renegade Thai general was shot in Bangkok on Thursday as the military planned to encircle the barricaded encampment of antigovernment demonstrators.


Gen. Khattiya Sawatdiphol, 59, better known as Seh Daeng, was allied with the protesters. He was struck in the head by a bullet during an interview with this reporter. The Associated Press reached an unidentified aide to the general who described his wound as тАЬsevere.тАЭ

The general, an incendiary figure who was in charge of security for the protesters, had been called a terrorist by the prime minister, who named him as the chief obstacle to a compromise plan to end a two-month sit-in here in return for an election in November. The latest violence is the most serious since a failed crackdown in April that killed at least 25 people.

Commanding his own paramilitary force of former Rangers, he was suspended without pay from the armed forces. A special committee was considering whether to strip him of his rank.

In an interview on Sunday, he denied being responsible for any violence. тАЬI deny!тАЭ he cried in English, with a laugh, when asked about the dozens of bombings that have set Bangkok on edge and about the mysterious black-shirted killers who escalated the violence on April 10 that killed 25 soldiers and civilians. тАЬNo one ever saw me.тАЭ

A tentative deal had been reached between the protesters and the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, only to fall apart this week.

Witnesses heard a loud blast followed by bursts of automatic gunfire near the heavily guarded Silom area, which is close to the protestersтАЩ encampment, The Associated Press reported.

Sure, at the moment it is perfectly safe. But personally, I DO NOT want to go to Thailand for the moment though, I believe that Lumpini is not really that far from those bar around Silom anyway. So if I happen to be there, I probably won't be going out from my hotel room much for safety reason.

Red shirts toughen demands

The red-shirt leaders Friday announced they would no longer compromise with the government and toughened their demands for the administration to comply with.

The red-shirt leaders demanded Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to meet the five demands as following:

1) The government must cease fire immediately.

2) The government must withdraw troops immedidatetly.

3) The government must lift the state of emergency immediately.

4) The House must be dissolved immediatley.

5) Abhisit and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban must resign and must not be in the caretaker Cabinet.

Natthawut Saikua, a red-shirt leader, Friday demanded Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to dissolve the House immediately and pull out troops or a big tragedy will happen to the country at night.

"If the prime minister does not order ceasefire, tonight will likely see a big tragedy. It is likely that Thai people will be forever feel pain in their heart because of what will happen tonight," Natthawut said.

Three M79 grenades were fired at the Saladaeng BTS station in the evening.

More grenades were also fired at the authorities at the Salasin Intersection.

Jor Sor 100 radio station reported that at least two people were injured in the two incidents.

Four red-shirt leaders have abandoned the prolonged anti-government rally at Bangkok's Ratchaprasong commercial district on Friday.

"It is now clear that four of our leaders - Veera Musikhapong, Adisorn Piangket, Paijit Aksornnarong and Visa Khantap - will not come to the protest site at Ratchaprasong," United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leader Kwanchai Praipana said.

However, another red-shirt core member Chinawat Haboonpad, said the UDD leadership was still in unity but some leaders had a different view.

"At first, we [the red-shirt leaders] agreed to end the rally but people have died during the political clashes. We then could not come into terms because none of us want to be in prison without receiving a fair treatment," Mr Chinawat said. "If the emergency decree is revoked the police could detain us further for 84 days."

Mr Chinawat said Mrs Paijit had a sore throat and Mr Visa was taking care of her, while Mr Veera was not leaving the UDD but he was tired and he was still somewhere nearby the protest venue.

The four leaders did not attend the red-shirt meeting to discuss the group's stance today.

I supposed it would be ok if you are traveling outside of bkk.
But since the red shirt carnival are centered in Silom, Siam Square and Sukhumvit, it would not be fun to travel in BKK now.
