View Full Version : Brits in Thailand

May 10th, 2010, 07:40
The FCO in the UK have amended their travel advice with regard to travelling to Thailand and state that they advise against all but essential travel to Bangkok. Extreme caution should be taken in other areas such as northern areas and Pattaya. They also advise against all travel to Preah Vihear temple area and against all but essential travel to and through some southern provinces, however, the latter two have been in place for some time.

Pattaya seems to be ok to travel to at the moment and travel insurance should be valid. I would check though with insurance companies - in case they try and wangle out of it.

My annual travel policy contains the wonderfully vague phrase that I should "...obey all advice from relevant authorities". Plenty of room for the Insurance Company to interpret that to their advantage in the eventuality of any claim.

May 10th, 2010, 17:40
Seems reasonable to me that if you choose to ignore advice from your Government advising against travel to a particular country, then your Insurance Company would have every right to refuse your claim.

Seems ridiculous that anybody would expect an annual travel policy which probably cost under ┬г100 to cover them for travelling against Govt. advice to a war zone or equivalent.

:dontknow:

I'm still hoping the Irish Govt. will change its advice in the next 2 weeks. Hopefully some agreement can be reached by both sides soon.

Just be careful with travel insurance.... before my recent trip to Bangkok, I called my insurance company to check they would cover me travelling and they said all was fine unless the FCO recommended against ALL travel.

Once there things got worse and I wanted to change my plans, but the new answer from the insurance company was... the trouble in thailand is classed as "civil unrest" which is not covered. So what about the volcano ash situation, can I claim for that? No, that is an "act of god" which is also not covered.

They did happily inform me that if I was injured in the "civil unrest" then I could claim :thumbleft:

Oops, I suggest you read the post on the thread "Cambodia here I come" to understand why some people won't travel without adequate insurance.

Oops, I suggest you read the post on the thread "Cambodia here I come" to understand why some people won't travel without adequate insurance.

Replace the word "people" with "nervous nelly wusses", and we're in agreement.

"Seems reasonable to me that if you choose to ignore advice from your Government advising against travel to a particular country"

My point was that the phrase "relevant authorities" is a broad brush and must be subject to dispute as to who is "relevant". I was not saying that it's put me off as I'll be in Thailand very shortly and am not personally worried at all about travelling particularly as I won't be in Bangkok anyway.

[X] A foreigner is worth up to US$ 10,000:

INSURANCE SCHEME FOR FOREIGNERS VISITING THAILAND IN EVENT OF RIOTS

Since 1 May 2009, the Royal Thai Government has set up an insurance scheme specifically for foreigners visiting the Kingdom who are affected by losses or harms or unable to leave the Kingdom in event of riots.

For the current situation related to the demonstrations taking place in Thailand, this insurance scheme covers losses and damages occurring during the period from 9 April 2010 at 16.31 hrs. until 31 March 2011 at 16.30 hrs., and applies to all foreign visitors entering the Kingdom legally. It covers losses and damages in the following three cases, as follows:

1) Loss of life, limbs or permanent disabilities in the amount of not exceeding US$ 10,000 per person;

2) Hospital expenses as incurred, and hospital stay, if necessary, for a maximum period of 10 days, in the amount of US$ 1,000 per person and not exceeding US 10,000 per person;

3) Loss or damage due to travel limitation in the amount of US$ 100 per person per day but not exceeding the total of US$ 10,000 per person.

To make claims under the Insurance Scheme for Foreigners Visiting the Kingdom, those eligible should contact Indara Insurance Public Company Limited (at +662-205-7711) within 30 days as from the date when the losses or damages occurred.

Among the documents required are: 1) copy of the affected person's passport with immigration stamp; 2) death certificate and forensic report in case of death, or doctor reports in case of loss of important organs or limbs, or injuries; and 3) document certifying that the person concerned is covered by the insurance.

For more information, foreign visitors may also contact the Tourism Authority of ThailandтАЩs hotline at 1672.

It should be noted that this Insurance Scheme does not cover foreigners with resident status in Thailand. Neither does it cover losses and damages occurring outside Thailand or due to causes other than the riots, including acts of terrorism.
