Copy of E-mail requesting help.....

"Dear Khun Waraporn,

We need your help .

I have been advised by a friend who works in PTTAR Company in Rayong that her husband is in urgent need of a blood transfusion.
His blood type is AB negative and this is unusual for Thai people.
The Sirikit hospital advises this blood group is more common for people from Europe.
Can you help by circulating this e-mail to expats group and if any one who can donate some blood to assist this poor person?

If you can please contact Khun Nunthiya at her mobile phone number 081 8632850 or Khun Nida at Phone no. 081-8655786

Thank you vry much in advance for all your help.

Regaards,
Nida starrs."

Please jinks ... who are these people?:

Khun Waraporn
Khun Nunthiya
Nida (S)tarrs

What is this place?:

PTTAR Company in Rayong

Do you know anything about the details?
Is there a compelling reason (unspecified) folks on this Board would give blood for this cause (unknown)?
Shirley my dear man ... giving blood is a serious decision, triggered by serious need, agreed to for serious reasons. None of which appears in your thread.
Appealing to the potentially sympathetic usually requires some sympathetic context.

As a regal Moderator of this Board, you are ~ as usual ~ wrapped in an enigma, difficult to decipher, comin' at us, outta the blue.

I can't believe anyone could possibly be so callous and inhuman as to make such a statement! Any person in good health can donate blood. I and many others do so quite frequently. If this was my blood type, which it isn't, I wouldn't hesitate to oblige not knowing a further thing about the people in need.

Smiles you are one fucking unfeeling and heartless shit. Don't ever darken my doorstep you fucking cold-blooded bastard.

Please sir, comport yourself. I was not having at the (potential) quest, but asking for details only ... as there were precisely none. Can you provide more than jinks, who does a very poor job indeed?

FYI: My old man would enthusiastically deny the "fucking cold-blooded bastard" part . . . though to be honest, I might think about it for awhile.

And a fellow Aussie to boot! Disappointing. :headbang:

And I presume that you would also ask for details about a drowning person before allowing him in the lifeboat?

Smiles, you are scum, plain and simple.

Can anyone cite what the restrictions are for donating blood in Thailand?

As a man who admits he's had sexual contact with another man (since 1977) I'm not eligible to donate blood here in the US, per the Red Cross. That would reduce the pool on THIS board by 99.9%, I would think.

I'm not a big fan of Smiley, but in this instance he is correct. Just who are these people and why is the gay community being asked to reach out? I also adore the people who would so gladly reach out to help strangers via an internet request, but then add: if, only, but, (insert excuse here) and then bash anyone who asks for clarification as to who, what, where, when, why.

no one ever asks who you sleep with and is not interested, the blood is all checked any way.
[X] No! The rules for blood donations are there for a reason. And the Thai Red Cross in Bangkok sticks to them.
[X] No! Perfect blood testing is neither possible nor cheap. http://www.bloodbook.com/index.html

If I was a suitable candidate I'd be there, even though I have given a lot lately, as the doctor said to me, Im pure with no illness now, you can donate blood in Thailand no one ever asks who you sleep with and is not interested, the blood is all checked any way.

Yet again you have just proved how very naive you are and a danger to the general public. Rules and regulations concerning donated blood are there for a very good reason, and if you think all stocks are checked in Thailand of all places then you are not only very naive but completely stupid as well.

Huh? Your objections to the request make absolutely no sense. What? Do you think they're asking for a rare type of blood for malicious reasons? Maybe trying to steal your blood, and sell if on the blackmarket, or something?

Really, they're asking for a couple liters of blood, not a kidney. It's ok, your body will make more.

Matt, You are absolutely correct.
Thousands of people around the world each day volunteer to donate a unit of blood on humanitarian grounds alone and most have no idea where their donation may be used. This is a compassionate gesture making it something that most people on this forum would never understand.

Well, I very highly doubt if you called, they'd ask you to goto some dark alley in Bangkok to give the blood. My guess is, it'd be at a hospital somewhere. So "they" is the health care professionals in this country.

Does it really matter who the people are? A quick check with Google shows that PTTAR is a company in Rayong.

The message says:
His blood type is AB negative and this is unusual for Thai people. The Sirikit hospital advises this blood group is more common for people from Europe.

It would appear the person needing the blood is in Queen Sirikit Hospital near Sattahip. Jinks in posting the message says he received it as an email requesting help - IMO he does not need to investigate the message. I also received the message through someone at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya. It also appears in today's Pattaya City Expats Club Newsletter. The intent appears to be to quickly contact as much of the Expat community as possible in hopes of finding someone with the rare blood type - not just the Gay community.

Also, using google, I found this website http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_rare_is_ab_negative_blood, which states that this blood type is almost non-existent in Orientals:

Type AB negative blood is quite rare. In general, the percentage of this blood type in any population is less than 1%. This is due to the fact that type AB blood is the least common type of blood in virtually all populations and, furthermore, Rh negative blood is typically found in only 15% or less of any population. The exact percentage of AB negative blood varies among different ethnic groups and in different geographic regions. For example, the overall U.S. average is approximately 0.6%, the value in African-Americans is about 0.2%, and the value in Oriental-Americans, Hawaiians, North American Indians, and Australian Aborigines is virtually zero percent.
