View Full Version : Not being gay now a political weapon in Thailand

December 1st, 2009, 14:12
Privy Councillor Prem Tinsulanonda is widely rumoured to be interested in young men. The Deputy Speaker of the House recently addressed a rally (http://www.bangkokpost.com/opinion/opinion/28347/pa-prem-left-by-his-ons-to-fend-for-himself-after-attacks) where he wore a red shirt and made the comment "What's wrong with stepping on to the stage of the red shirt people? I am 100% red, my wife, my children and all my grandchildren are all red. If I were wrong that is because I am not gay." Further political commentary has been made on the issue on various sites (http://thaipoliticalprisoners.wordpress.com/2009/11/30/prem-abandoned/).

Prem has been known for his tastes for many, many years so nothing very new there.

It is not his tastes that are news, but the fact that his tastes are being referred to publicly at a political rally, and in a derogatory way in order to belittle him. Whether the tactic will work is another matter, but commenting on the Head of the Privy Council(and an ex Prime Minister) in this way, would once have been akin to treason.

I guess the Thais had to catch up with the rest of the world sometime, however depressing that may be.

If I were wrong that is because I am not gay
So, logically, what he is saying is "If I were right that is because I am gay"
Ergo: It is right to be gay and wrong to be a red shirt?
