View Full Version : San Francisco Hotel

November 10th, 2009, 13:39
I will be visiting San Francisco in early February 2010. Since I have never been to that part of the US before, I want to ask the members of this forum if they could recommend some hotels in SF. I know there are lots of hotels, and I have already checked the Agoda web site, so if noone here has any recommendations, I will just go ahead and book through them. The reason why I post my question here, is that some of you might be from that part of the world and therefore be familiar with hotels in SF. I would prefer a hotel downtown, centrally located and preferably not over 100 US per night. Anyway, thanks for any advice from you guys!

Do you know what "not over $100 per night" buys you in a big American city these days? Well...it's not much.

Check reviews here, but you better open your wallet if you want anything decent.

You don't mention your age. Many hotel chains offer a discount, often around 15%, for guests who are 62+. A friend tells me that although only his fifties he often books a 62+ rate as the check-in clerks have no idea what all the room rate codes mean and don't know to check his ID for birth date. Your travel agent may also have access to better room rates than Agoda as you could be eligible for an even better rate in conjunction with your international ticket. Beyond that I haven't been to San Francisco to stay for years and years (transit a couple of times) although I believe that if you are prepared to stay out near the airport and use the BART system to travel in to the city centre you may also find that a cheaper option. By the way this is the wrong Forum so your post may be moved to somewhere more appropriate.

How ironic! I have a friend in his sixties who claims to be in his early fifties on his internet profiles!

Not Donald from Disney; Donald from Melbourne. Surely you've seen him around.

I spent a 4-day weekend in San Francisco back in 06. I stayed at a small gay bed & breakfast on the edge of Castro. It is on a quiet residential street and I found it quite pleasant.

I personally didn't consider San Fran my cup of tea but I hope that you enjoy it. Public transport is pretty good in San Fran so where you stay probably isn't all that important.

My Thai friend and I stayed at the Villa Florence in May of this year. GREAT location and great hotel for a very reasonable price we thought . The hotel is right on Powell where the Cable cars run. Arriving by air simply take the BART to Union square and walk about one block. Good Thai food across the street.

Lovely_Rs, if your recommendation is for the hotel at the Central (Shih Yu-Lang) YMCA San Francisco, then don't bother; it is shut down. The whole branch is effectively shutdown and the building - and what used to be the hotel - has been taken over by the City to house homeless persons (or some such nonsense)....

Given that a lot of U.S. hotel chains have standardized services and rooms, it really does not matter which one to go. It only matters if you want to spend time in a "specialized" type of hotel.

I usually use priceline to bid for a room. Also, I use this website to determine how much to bid and what kind of hotel I want: bidding for travel (http://biddingfortravel.yuku.com/). On that website, members review the hotels and post how much were their winning bids. Hope it helps.

P.S. Depending on whether it is an "el nino" year or not, it can rain a lot in February.

Staying downtown SF anywhere near the warf or Chinatown....will cost you easily $200 night..........even the outlying areas will be hard pressed to find less than $100 night.......But please do go......It will be worth it..!! I suggest to take the Trolly from the Warf up the hill to Chinatown........Lunch at the warf and dinner in chinatown.....!!

I'd suggest you go to the website for the SF Convention and Visitors Bureau http://www.sfcvb.org
They have all sorts of info and discount tickets and a reservation service that is as good as going thru agoda or priceline.
There is also a calendar of conventions so you can see what you'll be up against. There a couple of big ones in Feb.
I gave a quick look for places in to $100 or less range and there are a couple of good ones, and a few duds. If yopu have your eye on something PM me and I can tell you what I know about the hotel/area.

Weather is probably going to be rainy and cold. There is a chance you can hit a warm spell with weather in the 80's but don't bank on it.

This place is going to be your best value for your price range. It is a few blocks from Union Square. The location is a bit too "Tenderloin" for hiso types, but that explains the price. If you like live theater, check out the half price theater ticket booth at Union Square, similar to NYC but obviously smaller scene.

Yes I have toured this hotel and it very charming (though never stayed there).

I would like to thank all of you guys who posted an answer to this thread, both the ones that were really helping my search for a hotel in San Francisco and the weird ones that were about whether some members are in their 60s or older. As for me, I belong to the age group of The King of Pop and The Material Girl, so I guess I will not receive any senior citizen discount yet. I have wanted to visit the city ever since I started reading about what was going on in the gay scene in San Francisco back in the 1970s. It will probably be totally different from what I expect, but I look forward to the experience. So once again : Thank you!

The 70's? Oh! When there were more bathhouses in SF than boybars in Pattaya.

A bit of an exaggeration. But it felt that way. Like all good things, it has to end. I think you'll see more of that San Francisco in a Jack Wrangler movie than the way it is currently. It is still a fun city.
