When the Ottoman Turks poured into Constantinople, it marked the death of what had once been the mighty Roman Empire. After three days of looting and carnage, Sultan Mehmed II gave a guarantee that those remaining would not be harmed and could return to their dwellings. The Greek Orthodox Church continued to offer services, even though its main symbol, Hagia Sophia, had been turned into a mosque.
