Happy Songkran 2016
Songkran สงกรานต์ is the Thai New Year festival. Thai New Years Day is the 13 of April every year but the holiday period includes 13 to 15 of April and in some areas can last up to a week. The word “Songkran” comes from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti meaning the astrological passage of transformation and change. Its very similar to the Hindu harvest festival celebrated in India in January to mark the arrival of spring. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart and the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia. The festive occasion is in keeping with the Buddhist and Hindu solar calendar. Songkran is celebrated in most Buddhist countries including Northern India, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and recently in Singapore.
The Songkran celebration is rich with symbolic traditions. Mornings begins with merit making. Visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks is commonly practiced. Performing water pouring on Buddha statues is considered an iconic ritual for this holiday. It represents purification and the washing away ones sins and bad luck. As a festival of unity, people who have moved away to the large cities usually return home to their loved ones and elders. There is a mass movement of people via bus and trains to the provinces in the days leading up to and after Songkran. As a way to show respect, younger people often practice water pouring over the palms of elders hands. Paying reverence to ancestors is also an important part of the Songkran tradition. The holiday is known for its water festival. Major streets are closed for traffic and are used as arenas for water fights. Everyone (including tourists) join in this tradition by splashing, squirting and pouring water on each other.
Songran is a great time to visit Thailand as its so much fun, everyone is in a really good mood and its a fantastic atmosphere. You will see so many gorgeous Thai guys walking around, often just wearing just jeans or shorts. I remember on Songkran a few years ago I was in Pattaya and splashed some water on a guy, he got me back by tipping a bucket of water over my head. We dried each other off and got chatting and spent a few hours together enjoying the festival. We were both getting horny ended up going to a short term hotel for quick suck and fuck session and then enjoyed the rest of the day together.
