I've read across the forums grumbles from expats about tourists making life difficult by paying more than the going rate. Is there really a going rate? isn't the sex business just a market like most other business? Or do expats residing here expect they are entitled to a lower rate while tourists pay what they like?

After living here as a new expat retiree for 18 months - I would say that there is a 3-tier pricing system:

- Thais who pay their escorts at a rate which tends to be 50% the price that us expats pay,
- Expats - who want to pay the non tourist price because we live here and we know what the expected expat price should be,
- Tourists - who pay the expat price or an inflated priced due to:
- their naïvete (lack of experience in the local escort market),
- come from Japan, South Korea, or China and will just pay more (why I am not sure - but when I ask my local massage friends they say the the first 2 tip on the high end),
- got money to burn (from saving for a long time) on their 2 week holiday and don't care what it costs.....

Seriously!!! Few on this forum have more experience of offing boys in Pattaya than me and I'm happy to pay the tourist rate. Expats come up with all sorts of ways to justify their underpayment of boys but describing tourists with over 20 years experience and 60-70 visits as naive is a new one.

I pay the equivalent of 3000 baht here so the 1500 in Thailand is chirpy chirpy cheap cheap. And they speak English (usually) and they're straight so more fun. It's the bogus naive claim I object to.

I mis-stated the point that I was trying to make.
I modified it below - hopefully to make my point clearer.
I am also in your camp - as an expat - I found a person who is well connected in the straight-guys-who-only-play-with-ladyboys part of life and she/he (the ladyboy) refers to me (for a fee of course) "straight" guys that she knows are a bit hard up (no pun intended) for money my way so that I can play with them and their prices tend to be in the 3.000 to 4.000 baht range and like you wrote below - they are fun and a nice diversion than the traditional MBs.
For my local guys that I solicit that are not via the ladyboy arrangement I pay the local expat price + 500 baht. I usually never share what I actually pay in these forums as I have been attacked by other forum members for:

- ruining the local market for the bargain hunters,
- creating unnecessary inflation

a.) generous tourists who willingly pay a premium over the expat rate in order to not take unfair advantage against the local guys,
b.) non-familiar with the local market - who pay the expat price or an inflated price due to:
- their lack of experience with the local escort market,
- come from Japan, South Korea, or China and will just pay more (why I am not sure - but when I ask my local massage friends they say the the first 2 tip on the high end),
- got money to burn (from saving for a long time) on their 2 week holiday and don't care what it costs.....

As regards the multi-pricing system mentioned above I would say I fall into the second category I.e. generous tourists. I’ve just returned from Pattaya where I spent a two week boy orientated holiday. Most nights I had a boy sleep with me ( 6 different ones) . These offs I sourced from (a) Jomtien Complex (b) Grindr (c) winner gay Gogo.
Money was not my issue, but I’ve made a number of trips to Pattaya over the years so I believe I know the system and try not to be ripped off. The issue was to off the more attractive boys who could communicate in English. My standard tip was 2000, but I did go higher for a super cute boy from Grindr who I kept for 2 nights and the day in between. I must have given him about 7000-8000 in tips and for a present and meals/drinks etc.

If giving that much makes you happy, I see no problem with it. But it is a different story when a boy asks for or even demands much more than the standard amounts, that's where I see a problem.

Yes I agree Gaybutton. If my stay in Thailand had been much longer, say 2 months which I’ve done in the past, the super cute boy would probably transitioned in my boyfriend. Then, by experience I know that he would have become really expensive in terms of cash, presents and entertainment for his friends,
In fact if I estimate my expenditure on boys during the two weeks and convert it into U.K. pounds it looks like terrific value for money,
Pattaya is still, despite everything, a great holiday destination for gays like myself who like Asian men.

...most i ever spent was 2k and that was only because it was bkk which usually commands a slightly higher price, he was drop dead masculine gorgeous, had a girlfriend and usually didnt bottom...most of the time my max is 1000...i normally dont do the same one twice in the same 10 day period but if i do i usually discount the price because its not new and its always him that contacts me wanting a second appointment...one short fit compact guy witha body like a kick boxer (nice firm muscle body) hassled me non-stop for a 2nd date even though 3 days prior I had pounded him hard...was a real surprise, didnt think I'd see him again...was real rough but clearly he didnt mind.
I dont begrudge the cheeky ones asking for 6k, if they get it then good on them...
