The ancient Greeks "took care" of young men (adolescents below about twenty) until their beards grew and they were considered mature. This was invariably sexual but rarely involved penetrative sex..
"Ephoebe" is the Ancient Greek for a young man of that age..

I had never before realised that there has to be a degree of feminism in a twink. I just asked around some friends and we all assumed the term referred generally o most young guys with nice bodies and cute faces.

I don't believe feminism has anything to do with it at all. Smooth, slim & not too old fits the bill. In Asia, I know of people up to at least 30 who I would class as twinks, although the percentage is thinning down by that age.

Your idea of twink as having feminine characteristics is not universally acknowledged. homorazzi.com's Beginner's Guide to Gay Labels does not agree -

Twinks are generally quite young (18 to mid-20’s), skinny, have essentially no body hair and may frequently be found applying foundation or fake tanning lotion. Generally, they act as though the entire world revolves around the fact that they are young and gay.

No, I am right. The boy next door type is less cute, less slim & very ordinary in comparison with a twink. Kind of like a twink who has let himself go.
